And prior, since the 70s, MEK recruited its political cadres from students and the middle class. They built a proper, organized political movement - parallel to many others at the time. Reza, on the other hand, has nothing. No "50,000 defectors." His base consists of lumpen street thugs and mercenaries who just go around torching libraries, mosques, hospitals, schools, city buses, and ambulances. Armed with machetes and molotovs, they went around slaughtering all kinds of people from children to traffic police.
