Physicians’ Week: NMA President Offers Medical School Admission to Orphans, Adopts Orphanage As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the less privileged in society, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Bala Audu, has extended direct admission offers to orphans from the Divine Children’s Home in Uyo to study Medicine and other courses at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare. This generous offer, effective immediately, was made during the inauguration of a medical outreach at the orphanage as part of the 2024 Physicians’ Week celebration. Dr. Audu further announced that the NMA will officially adopt Divine Children’s Home as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. In response, the Coordinator of the orphanage, Matron Esther Obot, a nurse by profession, expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Audu and the NMA for their compassion. She offered prayers for the continued protection and blessings of Nigerian doctors as they dedicate themselves to the care of the sick. During the visit, Dr. Audu, on behalf of the NMA, presented food items and toiletries to the children, followed by the flag-off of the medical outreach. Dr. Audu was accompanied by members of the NMA National Officers’ Committee, the Akwa Ibom State NMA branch leadership, the Chairman of the NMA National Committee on Physicians’ Week, and the Local Organising Committee.

NMA DELEGATION MEETS WITH MINISTER OF HEALTH, SUBMITS REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF CONMESS SALARY STRUCTURE On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr (Prof) Bala Audu, led a high-level delegation to meet with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. The delegation included members of the National Officers’ Committee (NOC), Past Presidents, NMA FCT leadership, and representatives from affiliate bodies. The Honourable Minister was meeting with the NMA delegation on behalf of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, who was unavoidably indisposed. During the meeting, Dr Bala Audu presented key concerns, including the urgent need for a review of the CONMESS salary structure in light of the current economic realities. He also emphasized the importance of intensified efforts to secure the release of doctors currently held by kidnappers, amongst other issues. In his response, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of healthcare workers, as part of its ongoing efforts to address brain drain in the sector, while highlighting key aspects of the newly unveiled Federal Government policy to retain medical experts within Nigeria. He also assured the delegation that the ministry is working diligently to ensure the prompt payment of outstanding CONMESS arrears, and also open to discuss the review of the salary structure.
