yap to say it's not just ness's ego that changed, but his understanding of kaiser. pre-nel he did not see/acknowledge where his malice came from, so he went along with a lot thinking it was building him up and not knowing that he was just pouring water into a leaky bucket

that's why in 301 they have a conversation centered around kaiser's mental where ness directly addresses his main insecurity. now that he's aware and processed it, unlike what we see in 243, he can give it the attention it deserves

the final goal is when ness gets exposed to the root of the issue through kaisers failure to see him as capable of change. yoichi doesn't explain, but ness puts together through these previous incidents that what kaiser sees in him is a projection of his lacking self-worth

we're shown in the same chapter and throughout the previous matches that ness has a habit of brushing off the more concerning parts of kaiser's dream. this isn't to say he doesn't care about him as a person, just that he isn't fully aware of his problems.

in both of these scenes we see ness witnessing kaiser at a new low. in 243 he expresses concern for him, but ultimately becomes captivated by his dedication to their shared dream (what ness entered the room thinking about) without understanding the reason behind his self-harm

i believe ness didnt specifically fall for the facade kaiser was letting on in the first place, but I also wouldnt say he fully saw through him from the start. kaiser believes he manipulated ness with an illusion of greatness but ness’ attachment doesnt come from being fooled-

kaiser never knew ness saw him as something beyond what he was letting on. he believed he was the embodiment of impossible and something that shouldnt have been plausible on earth in ness' eyes. but ness saw kaiser as a human like any other. with purpose & dreams to fulfill

what makes ness different is that he doesnt just see kaiser as a “genius”, he sees him as human. thats why moments where kaiser breaks down doesnt make ness push away, but instead makes him want to stay. kaiser isnt this big emperor who gets banished after one mistake.
