@VicLombardi @SR_TheInscriber Joker has been the best player in the league for the last 5/6 years...consistently, without much contest. Like LeBron or Jordan or Kareem. Too boringly superb to vote for. That said... bullying is a bit strong. Mildly outplayed?

@SR_TheInscriber Rudy Gobert knows how to play defense. Wemby knows how to play defense. They’re bludgeoned by Joker every time they play. How’s that defense going?

This is NOT an MVP debate. The MVP voting is silly and slanted at times. This is just an observation: A center just finished the season as the NBA leader in assists and rebound average (1st time ever) and 7th in scoring. A center did that. A center.

Agreed, just comes down to how they view govt intention. Friedman would occasionally say sometime like "the best intervention is none, but if we're going to intervene, the optimal way would be....". And to this day, that's why people say Friedman was in favor of a negative income tax.

There's a form of secular creationism that we might call Malicious Design: The idea that the limitations imposed by nature are actually the product of human systems designed to exploit or otherwise harm the masses. 🧵

@CptAncapistan @anarchist_frodo Chicago school and Austrians are like Jesuits and Franciscans. Sure, they're not the same, if you look closely enough. But against everyone else, they're awful similar, and on the same team.

@CptAncapistan @PhilosophyOfPhy I don't especially like his framing. If 97% of scientists say a bridge will fall ... then you have to believe it? Nonsense and fiddlesticks. Macroeconomic prediction, same kinds of tools and models, has predicted 9 of the last 5 recessions, while only missing 2.

@HARPER04_5 FMVPs is my current top measure. Best player on the winning team. Basketball is for winning. If you are the anchor of a winning team, that tells me you're playing right. Stats without winning? easy to stuff stat-box.

@ChristianHeiens The more interesting question is: "What in the structure of organizations makes all organizations lean leftist-ish" "Like most republicans in DC." Answer: coalitional politics as the driver of decisions drives orgs towards leftism.

@ChristianHeiens Libertarianism, leftism, and conservativism are 3 very different directions. Unfortunately, most people, driven by us-them instead of by clear thinking, look at the other two sides as "almost the same" or "pretty similar"

This happened, and keeps happening, because Leftism isn't the antithesis of Libertarianism. It is the fulfillment of Libertarian principles once they're applied to the real world long enough. Libertarianism paves the way for a Progressive takeover in the same way a setting sun paves the way for nightfall. We look around and see all the reds and yellows emanating from the setting sun and think to ourselves, "How could all this light have any relationship to darkness?" But nighttime requires twilight for it to exist in the first place. The latter cannot come to fruition before the former has served its purpose. Now, with the analogies out of the way, here's how this actually plays out in reality. Libertarianism contains no real defense mechanism against Progressive hijacking because its entire worldview is built on refusing to engage with substantive political questions in the first place. It does not want to answer what a society is for, what kind of people or norms it should protect, what moral worldview it should uphold, or who its enemies are. It wants these questions to be left to each individual. But no institution can survive on that basis forever. They're by definition a collective endeavor. Every organizational structure, from Reddit and Wikipedia to the Cato Institute and the Federal government itself, has to eventually has to decide what it exists to protect and what it is willing to fight against. Progressives are willing to answer those questions in a way that Libertarians are not. So the Libertarian opens the gates (either to its own organizations or to the state if they're ever able to influence policy strong enough, as they occasionally do) in the name of individual freedom, and the Progressive inevitably just walks right through the open door, hijacks everything without a shot being fired, and then converts it into a project to promote THEIR vision for society, THEIR social norms, THEIR conception of the good, THEIR moral worldview, and THEIR friends against THEIR enemies.
Air Katakana@airkatakana

how did every libertarian organization get taken over by leftists who believe in the exact opposite of the original mission? reddit was the canary in the coal mine but somehow it is still happening, even now after woke has died down

@CptAncapistan @TheEcho13 There are two issues at play here: 1: Astrology is as defensible as flat-earthism. Or communism. 0% Truth has left the building 2: Lots of people have crazy beliefs. The question of how polite people are with others' crazy beliefs is information.

My friend. You very literally just proved the point. If you aren’t able to have a conversation about something outside of your interests, and if you’re not willing to entertain her interests and opinions as talking points instead of debate topics, you’re a bad date. You’re telling her right out the gate that you’re no fun.
Deivon Drago@DeivonDrago

This is a bad take. Astrology ought to be a non starter, unless you are being facetious about it. Taking astrology seriously suggests that you are epistemically broken. Possibly scientifically illiterate.

@rpondiscio Teachers mostly like someone who cares. Students mostly find it super-annoying, and are not at all shy about saying so. I eventually developed a no-more-than-3-questions-per-class-period rule to limit how annoying I was to my peers. Limit, not eliminate

@CptAncapistan More so ... we have seen a shift from Marx to Rawls as a philosophical foundation, because Marx promises a result from equality, which never arrives, while Rawls starts from equality as a first principle, regardless outcome.

@shoulder_shrugs @sentientist I think they pretty much did dominate history. For most of human history pre-1600, China or India was the big, advanced civilization on the planet. Other places were backwaters. Including Europe. Rome had a brief period where it was ahead.

@sentientist Isn’t the point valid? Why was east Asia relatively poor and weak for most of the last 2000 years compared to Europe and more recently America? If IQ indeed determines success, shouldn’t east Asia have dominated history? They clearly didn’t (though that may be changing now).

@sentientist East asia was phenomenal, but so centralized that it wasn't able to develop a rigorous approach to disagreement with the boss. Which is a fatal flaw for industrial revolution compounding.

@td_nash I'm willing to accept a few additions to the Top 5 contenders list. Bird and Kareem have 2. Wilt was before the era, would have at least one, and was a human stat-machine. Curry changed the entire game. Jokic is obscenely good on basically every metric known to man.
