An idea worth seriously exploring:
Optional verified approximate location (city/region only) — not precise GPS, never mandatory.
The goal isn’t to reduce anonymity. It’s to increase account authenticity while preserving privacy and free speech.
How it could work
Verification is completely optional.
Users who opt in verify they genuinely belong to a city or region.
Their profile shows only an approximate location (e.g. Bengaluru, India or California, USA), never a street, neighbourhood, or live location.
A visible badge indicates the location has been verified by X.
Why this matters
Today it’s extremely easy to:
Create fake local identities.
Impersonate residents during emergencies.
Run scams pretending to be nearby.
Coordinate harassment while constantly changing accounts.
Spread misinformation by claiming to be “on the ground.”
A lightweight location verification layer raises the cost of all of these without forcing identity disclosure.
Privacy-first by design
The system should follow a privacy-first architecture:
Exact location is never displayed.
No live tracking.
No location history.
Users can remove verification anytime.
Verification only confirms an approximate region.
The public sees only what the user chooses to share.
X stores only the minimum information necessary.
Why optional is the key
Many users—journalists, activists, whistleblowers, victims of abuse, and ordinary people who value privacy—should be able to remain completely anonymous.
This feature should never become a requirement.
Instead, it creates a trusted layer for users who want additional credibility.
Anonymity remains the default.
Authenticity becomes a choice.

Neither advertisers nor other users should have access to private location data.
Why this aligns with X’s mission
The best safety systems don’t rely on censorship—they rely on increasing the cost of deception.
This proposal doesn’t restrict speech.
It doesn’t require real names.
It doesn’t require identity disclosure.
It simply gives people the option to prove they’re genuinely connected to the place they claim to represent.
More authenticity.
Less fraud.

Same freedom.
