Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi will stand trial in France after losing his appeal to have a rape charge dismissed. A French appeals court ruled there is "sufficient evidence" for the case to proceed to a full criminal trial. Hakimi, 27, denies any wrongdoing, and no trial date has been set. The allegation relates to an incident at Hakimi's home near Paris on February 25, 2023, where prosecutors allege he raped a 24-year-old woman he had been communicating with on Instagram. The woman reported the alleged rape to police but did not file a formal complaint; prosecutors nevertheless pursued the case and charged Hakimi on March 2, 2023. Following the ruling, Hakimi said: "Justice looked me in the eyes and said to me: 'If you weren't famous, there never would have been a case.'... Finally, I will be able to speak." His accuser said she hopes the trial will allow her "to be heard." Morocco's coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, backed his captain, calling him "the best right-back in the world" and saying the team stands behind him.
