Every day of life is a gift, and doing everything to have the best qualify of life is as important as disease management and working towards disease regression. I had the honour to know Mel, to see him and Annabel spend the maximal time enjoying walks and family meals, and for the most part pain free in his last months. Many people only discover they have cancer when they become symptomatic, this is typically when the cancer has progressed, going from stage 3 moving into stage 4. Cancer is a metabolic disease. People need to understand their metabolic health. Cancer is essentially cells that have unlimited replicative cycles (constantly dividing) and avoid apoptosis (don’t die). Mitochondria control the cell cycle, and also control apoptosis. When mitochondria are harmed and become chronically unhealthy, they send out signals, that increase inflammation inside of the cell, upregulating energy production using aerobic fermentation, this is a primordial way to gain energy from glucose. When this is kicked in, cells behave more like fermenting yeast, growing and dividing ravenously, so long as there’s lots of glucose around providing the energy and building blocks to grow. There are many blood markers that can tell you if your overall mitochondrial health is going to be good. Anything that makes your body need and secret more insulin, will over time ultimately harm mitochondria. Glucose fuels cancer cells, insulin tells them to grow and divide, whilst excess insulin harms mitochondria, making them unable to induce apoptosis so as to safely retire a dysfunctional cell. The food we put in our body affects blood glucose and insulin. We do not need dietary carbohydrates. Our liver makes 150-170 grams of glucose that our body needs every day. Restricting dietary carbohydrates lowers insulin demand/secretion. How do we know if we are keeping our insulin levels healthily low? Daily capillary ketone test between 4-6pm for 7 days in a row. Ideally BHB levels will be above 0.5 mmol/L. Healthcare professionals need to also support patients in patient choice of how to personalise their healthcare plan. Currently many treatments are only given to patients who have had standard of care, and not allowed for those who choose a pathway more suited to their needs. There are many hidden underlaying conditions a person with cancer will have. Those need to be resolved in order to get their body to a stronger point so that their body can work on healing itself. Removing the things that harm the body and providing the body with all the materials it needs to work on fixing itself. Regular safe blood tests that provide a detailed metabolic profile along with anthropometrics, help patients monitor and actively work on, and see the results of their efforts. Along with helping to engage their physicians in supporting patients in addressing their metabolic health which targets cancers Achilles heel, which is their primary fuel source and growth signalling hormones. I work with a fantastic team, to metabolically phenotype people with and without cancer, in longstanding ketosis and a suppressed ketosis state, normal and over weight, young and old. To understand how we may improve health outcomes from chronic (metabolic) diseases such as cancer and ageing assessed through blood biomarkers and liquid biopsies, using ketogenic metabolic therapy. @Yvoni_Kyr @_LucyPetagine @_kurtisedwards @Brads_science It was my honour to know Mel, the most gentle giant with the biggest heart. @Annabel_Croft dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/arti…
