THE IDEA THAT TRUMP WILL CHANGE HIS BEHAVIOUR AFTER THE MIDTERM POLLS IS A DELUSION Midterms affect domestic bargaining, not foreign policy fundamentals. On China, Russia, and India, there is bipartisan consensus inside the Pentagon, CIA, and State Department. Before Trump came to power, when the Biden administration was pressuring India through different means, many Indians believed that once Trump return, things would improve. That belief itself was a delusion. What many Indians forget is that India US relations have been declining steadily since 2020, after Galwan. It was after Galwan that the Indian government realised the Americans ultimately wanted India to fight China. That was one of the main reasons the US helped India’s economic rise after 2014. Their long term plan was to build India into a force capable of confronting China, while the US would fight a hybrid war in the background, similar to what it is doing today in Europe through the Russia Ukraine conflict. Once the Americans realised, post Galwan, that India would not fight China on their instructions, relations began to deteriorate from their side. After that, pressure increased under the Biden administration. First came the farmer protests. Then the internationalisation of the Nijjar killing. Then the unrest in Manipur. Alongside this, they destabilise India’s periphery through regime change operations. Now, the US has effectively formed a strategic triangle around India through Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Trump did not create this downturn. He merely accelerated a decline that had already begun after 2020. His language may appear rough and undiplomatic, but he is executing the same policy framework that the Biden administration followed toward India. The real trigger for the sharper decline came in mid 2025, when China issued warnings over a Taiwan invasion. The Pentagon asked India to open the LAC front if Taiwan was attacked. India refused. After that refusal, the US decided to apply far greater pressure. The only positive outcome for India in U.S in last 5yr. is that the Democrats did not win the presidential election.

Today I got a small but sharp insight into why members of otherwise respectable rural families are posting sleazy reels. My cab driver asked if I was on Instagram. Then he suggested an account and asked how was it. I scrolled through it and asked - who is this woman? ‘That’s my wife, back in Allahabad’ Reel after reel showed her sweeping a big aangan. Videos were shot from an angle - elevated and carefully framed to show her from front. Each reel had about 11-12K views. Followers 12K. And comments - ‘Bhabhiji you are really pretty’ ‘Thoda zoom in please’ ‘Agni baar paas se banao.” It wasn’t outright sleazy but definitely suggestive. I asked him why he thought this was good content. He said - ‘people like her, for some reason. Of course she is beautiful. I keep telling her to stay consistent. Consistency is the key for social media’ I asked - ‘what do you guys get out of doing this?’ He - ‘Maybe you don’t know much about social media. You look like you work in an office. But people earn lakhs and crores from reels. Just look around.’ Me - ‘has she earned anything yet?’ He - ‘No. But once the views cross one lakh, money starts. It just does. We hear these stories all the time.’ Then I gathered courage and asked - ‘isn’t it inappropriate? Strangers are ogling at your wife’ His reply - ‘Even film heroines are ogled at. And they are big stars. There is no problem if ogling is happening from a distance. And if she can earn multiple times of what I earn driving a cab, then why not?’ People think everyone can earn lakhs out of making reels. That sleaze is acceptable because filmy people also do it and they are stars and icons. I did not have the heart to tell him while he was driving a cab in Delhi, she was going to elope with one of her admirers soon.
