We've gone hybrid. CTR has almost doubled.
Article search in @WSJ app now combines keyword matching with semantic search. This means less time searching, more time reading our trusted content.
More enhancements on the way.

The Next 100 Years ★★★☆☆ by George Friedman
Nothing dates faster than confident geopolitical forecasts.
Friedman predicted the decline of China and Russia… and the militaristic rise of Japan and Turkey who will start a war with the US. Let’s just say the scoreboard isn’t kind.
Still, the book isn’t a miss. The long-range thinking around demographics and power cycles is compelling — and occasionally brilliant. This passage stopped me:
“The Russians think in terms of twenty-year cycles… They saw Germany go from being a cripple in 1932 to being at the gates of Moscow in 1941.”
The lesson? The absurd becomes possible faster than we think. Especially in geopolitics.

QWERTY keyboard was designed in 1873 to effectively force typers to slow down, because the typewriters of that time were jamming when adjacent keys were struck in quick succession. So, counterproductive measures were introduced to scatter the commonest letters over all keyboard rows, concentrating them on the left hand-side, to make it harder for right-handed people to get to them. It’s mind boggling that we’re still using this counterproductive layout today. -Jared Diamond

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir ★★★☆☆ I wanted to love it, but it’s all a bit... thin? A decent enough premise stretched out like a long commute, held together by some rather convenient plot armor and "science-y" hand-waving. High marks for effort, but it’s a solid 3/5 at best. Not quite the masterclass I was promised. ☕️🛰️

The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley ★★★★★ for an ultimate mindbend, read this concurrently w. the Sixth Extinction by Kolbert or w. Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel. It’s the contrarian view to the apocalyptic pessimism that dominates our collective narrative today: climate change, geopolitical doom and gloom, food safety, etc. It will absolutely raise your eyebrow and will sound like a conservative denier of all things backed by science. But, this is a very well researched and a compelling contrarian perspective.

Man Of The Hour ★★☆☆☆ This highly anticipated TV show for the watch geeks is a dud. The contrived Bourdain vibes, cheap suspense and other Wei Koh antics do lots of injustice to the storytelling about watches. It would have been a much better outcome if Ben Clymer and his team produced such a series.
