If Muawiya and his son Yazid hadn't messed things up, the concept of Khulafa al-Rashidun (Rightly Guided Caliphs) probably wouldn't be limited to just four. The Prophet (ص) never prophesied that there would be only four Rightly Guided Caliphs. That idea was formulated much later.
