@donaldtheuugeek @sandofsky Ah yes, “divine code” - it comes from the heavens when needed as a burst of inspiration, but no explanation. Not even the author knows how it works.

It's no coincidence that "crypto skeptics" @davidgerard and @molly0xFFF are also respected, long-time @Wikipedia community leaders. Verifiability and reliable sourcing matter for writing an encyclopedia, and also for recognizing fraud.
Ed Zitron@edzitron

I feel like a lot of people were pretty rude to @davidgerard and @molly0xFFF in particular, as well as @SilvermanJacob. I can still remember earlier in the year when the latecomer's guide came out and major media outlets were like "we need to be cautiously optimistic :)"

@alicegoldfuss @jimprall Just this morning I ran into an interesting paper on mastodon on a topic I’d not heard of before (in psychology, not anywhere close to my normal interests). On twitter right now it’s all politics or bemoaning twitter’s decline. Much happier with mastodon at the moment.

@michael_nielsen And Culture orbitals are pretty cool megastructures too - ring worlds on a medium scale.

I'm sorta struggling to articulate this. I guess I'm just saying that the designer in me wants to be *surprised* in the same way as I am by the borromean rings, or the hindu-arabic numerals, or [any other example of amazing design].

Curious: what are the most interesting megastructure ideas you know of, and why do you find them interesting?

@michael_nielsen Do Iain Banks’s GSV ships count? Multi kilometer size with billions of passengers/residents? The descriptions in some of the Culture books seem quite fascinating - though I suppose not far from modern cruise ships in so,e ways.

@michael_nielsen If you have a mastodon account I’m happy to follow you there. It seems fine to me. Better in some ways now that some of my favorite twitter people post there. And cross posting is possible.

Curious: are there credible attempts to replace Twitter? Ideally, with something significantly better. (I tried Mastodon, and it didn't seem like a good option for me.)

@dan_abramov Typical day for me: go to Home tab to see what people I follow have posted or boosted; if I see boosted posts that interest me check out the user and follow if I want to see more of them. Doesn’t matter what server they are on. Local tab can be fun to scroll, then Federated tab.

@dan_abramov Just one account on a server you like, and then follow anybody anywhere.

@MarkBoslough If you click on your profile picture you should see your full mastodon address including server name - it should look something like @markboslough@….. - we can’t find you without the second piece (server name).

@MarkBoslough Ah - once you’re on a server that’s your server. To move you need to create a new account on the new server and then there’s an export-import process.

@MarkBoslough No, it’s federated, you can pick whatever one you want. Fediscience.org might be good for you though, it’s got lots of academic and climate scientists on it.

@drvolts See you on mastodon in a week David :) with twitter you had to find people to follow too, it’s not that different, we’ve just forgotten how we started on here.

So it's fine to come on here with your nerd swagger & say "Mastodon isn't THAT complex, you just choose a server & then you have 3 basic feeds & your instance is ..." whatever, you've lost 99% of people. The post-Twitter winner will require the least change in behavior.

@arthursmith @egonwillighagen Admin of FediScience here. We are happy with new people. @ceptional reported the same problem and if I understood it right solved it by signing up with another email address. If you open your DMs, I could send you an invitation link; maybe that will help, not sure.

@egonwillighagen I was already on another mastodon instance but that one is shutting down so I need to move.

@egonwillighagen Hi - I tried to join that server and it failed to send the verification email. Is it actually allowing new people on?
