Very pleased to share that I’ve passed my PhD viva. Many people to thank for getting me here but foremost among them my supervisors @RachelAldred Tom Cohen, @jamiewfurlong and @andrewsmithwest I could not have asked for more supportive and knowledgeable colleagues!

1st morning volunteering at school street. Takeaways: a. Watching kids scoot/stroll freely is joyful b. It wasn’t controversial - everyone was fine c. The space created conversations - I learnt about food bank coordination/school laptops/parklets d. Our head has a cool dog

@GiulioFerrini Such a good example! I’ve been using it as a School Street case study for a while, just as reminder that closures don’t always need to be temporary/camera enforced.

School streets are great! Safer streets, cleaner air, popular However, they only operate during term, and 2hrs a day. 95% of the year, the street remains grey, congested, polluted & dangerous Can we go further and create safe, playful spaces which prioritise children 24/7?

Huge congratulations to my PhD student, Fatemeh Mohamadi, who was awarded her PhD yesterday subject to minor amendments. Her work explores the significance of *humour* in tourists' images and experiences of Great Britain. Thanks to the examiners @jameskennell and @ilariapapp too.

@alisonstenning @Jen_Sustrans I actually took a very quick look at this for London using NTS data a while ago and it generally is more women do the school run (no surprise) but when men do it they’re more likely to drive. So there is definitely something to this.

By ameliorating air pollution and supporting children and carers’ active mobilities, School Streets can reduce existing transport and health inequities. But they'll do so much better if they they are fairly distributed.
