john and carolyn at the newman's own/george magazine charity event at the u.s customs house in new york (may 19, 1999).
“the kennedys say they are learning to live with the intense scrutiny they have received from the press since they started dating six years ago and married in september 1996. "we got married; she's not pregnant. what else is there to say?", john said at the newman's own/george magazine charity event at the u.s. custom house.
regarding the media's fascination with him, john said, "i've dealt with it for a long time. but it was new for carolyn, and she's gotten used to it. i think she's handled it very well", he said, looking adoringly at his wife, who was elegantly dressed in a black-and-brown yohji yamamoto-designed pantsuit. "actually, i don't know if you ever entirely get used to it", he said.
carolyn has developed her own style of dealing with the often-over-the-top interest in her, she said. "i choose not to make it an issue. it only becomes a problem for me when it's thrust in my face, or on my doorstep", adding that she no longer reads about herself in the papers, "because i don't want to know".
the gossip, she said, "has nothing to do with how i live my life. i have problems and issues just like anybody. but i'm a happy person, and maybe a better person, for not knowing".
"the novelty has worn off — not between us", added her husband, "but about us".
senator alfonse d'amato was there, seated at the head table with the kennedys and newmans. "jacqueline's the best", d'amato said, in one of the greatest freudian slips ever. "i mean, carolyn", he said, quickly correcting himself. "what a spirit, what confidence, what a zest to her. she talked to me about her italian grandmother. 'nana' was what she called her. she talked about her grandmother's spirit and her cooking, what a great cook she was. i talked about mama d'amato."
"and a sense of humor, boy, carolyn's got it", he said. "when i teased john about the possibility of his running for senator, carolyn stepped in and said, "i will support his running for the senate, provided he runs as a republican", she came right back at me.”
