Working class voices in theatre are so unrepresented , that all there is, is either caricature or totally false performances. Unfortunately, because that is all that has been fed, people become so used to it, it’s starts to be seen as the norm. Most plays have middle class perceptions put into the characters. I can hardly ever recognise most of what I see / hear. Of course middle class audiences and reviewers love it - this is the story they want to be told. There is no nuance or truth. This also extended to most tv portrayals and writing also. Artists shouldn’t have to do ‘outside voice ‘. Or , ‘speaking with your posh mate ‘ voice . All we get then, is watered down drivel. Yet if you speak authentically , it will seen as ‘too Street. Too urban.’. Most plays don’t and haven’t spoken for me in 1000 years so why do people listen?! Same old problem, not enough diversity in reviewers , programmers and writers . The audience also need to be cultivated and educated. . I’ve been subject to both racist and classist reviews - ‘this show was made by a chav’ . What most have come to understand as ‘good’ , won’t seem so if reviewers give it one star because it’s fake and offensive and totally inappropriate . After a lifetime in theatre and performance , you wonder if things will ever change. The faces change, but the views , attitudes and class stay pretty much the same .
