I met Abebe Selassie of the International Monetary Fund and informed him that the correct line for Uganda is value addition, peace and security, and open markets. However, we must deal with the high costs of transport, electricity and money, and discourage the externalization of profits so that they are reinvested here. The center of gravity of our economy is agriculture and manufacturing, and we must deliberately support them.

Hurricane Melissa has left deep scars on my beloved Jamaica & across the Caribbean - families displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and communities left in pain. My thoughts are with all affected. While Jamaica is well prepared, @IMFNews stands ready to support recovery if needed.
Kristalina Georgieva@KGeorgieva

My heart goes out to those across the Caribbean affected by Hurricane Melissa. The loss of lives and devastation are heartbreaking. The Fund stands ready to help as countries begin the path to recovery after this tragic event.

After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots. On September 1, 2025, I will rejoin @HarvardEcon as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics. I am truly grateful for my time at @IMFnews, first as Chief Economist and then as First Deputy Managing Director. I have had the privilege of working closely with the IMF’s brilliant and committed staff, colleagues in management, the Executive Board, and country authorities. I am especially thankful to @KGeorgieva and her predecessor, @Lagarde, for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve the IMF’s membership during a period of unprecedented challenges. I now return to my roots in academia, where I look forward to continuing to push the research frontier in international finance and macroeconomics to address global challenges, and to training the next generation of economists. imf.org/en/News/Articl…

Met with senior IMF officials in Washington, DC, led by Mr. @aselassie, Director of the Africa Department, to discuss strengthening Kenya’s partnership with the Fund. I emphasized the need for continued dialogue with the National Treasury to advance a new programme arrangement, especially in light of current global and domestic economic pressures. Acknowledging the IMF’s vital role in supporting Kenya’s macroeconomic stability, I underlined the importance of deeper engagement amid reduced concessional financing and global uncertainties such as trade tensions.

Excellent discussion with @mofnpzambia Minister @S_Musokotwane in Lusaka. I commended him on Zambia’s strong track record of implementing reforms under the IMF-supported program, despite a plethora of shocks. @IMFNews remains committed to support Zambia and its people.

I began my visit to Zambia by touring @Trade_Kings, one of the major fast-moving consumer goods manufacturers in Sub-Saharan Africa. It exemplifies private sector-led dynamism which drives investment in local manufacturing, supports entrepreneurship, and creates jobs.
