DESIGN PEOPLE-FRIENDLY PUBLIC SPACES A street isn't just from point A to B. It has to have experiential quality, joyful, comfortable, inviting & not just functional. People will walk when they feel invited to walk: Prof Tina Pujara @ #WSSTL2025 #Bengaluru #mobility #qualityoflife

Pictured above is Astronaut Leland D. Melvin's official NASA portrait. When NASA astronaut Leland Melvin was assigned to a space shuttle mission in 2008, he was told he could bring his family for the official photo shoot wearing the famous orange "pumpkin suit." They didn't specify two-legged or four-legged family members, and even though dogs were not typically allowed on the NASA base, Melvin considered his dogs part of his family. So, Melvin brought his rescue dogs, Jake and Scout, along with a neighbor who could hold them and keep them quiet in the back of his van. "I got to the guard shack, flashed my badge, and I gunned the van and drove to the photo lab," Melvin said. He then climbed the back stairs, where the photographer was waiting. Melvin went into the photo lab with 100 MilkBones to keep the dogs busy while he changed into his suit and came out. "They (the dogs) ran toward me, and I told the photographer to hold his finger on the shutter, and that's how the photo was born." After the photo shoot, Melvin had to change, and the MilkBones had disappeared. "The dogs started barking, and a security guard came in and asked if there were dogs in there," Melvin said. "We said, 'No, that's the doggy screensaver!'" After he changed, he was able to quiet the dogs and leave the area.

As Leo Varadkar this week argued that investing in rail should really mean more roads & more cars, let’s look at a typical urban European hellscape as a direct result of the woke #WarOnCars We’ve been warned, sheeple, wake up twitter.com/AdamBronkhorst…

#PhD student: Makes $30k a year. Works on weekends as well. Zero life-work balance. "Do you think I have a chance to become a professor?" Prof: "Yes, of course! Finish this project and we will publish excellent papers. I am sure you will easily find a faculty position." ▫️ 2 years later: Student finishes the project. Professor writes a report. Papers are published. Student: "Do you think my CV is strong enough?" Prof: "Yes, you are the best!" ▫️ Next 4 months: Student submits 50 well-tailored applications for faculty positions. Zero interviews. A lot of broken dreams. ▫️ Key takeaways: 1. Make sure you distinguish encouragement from reality. - By encouraging you, your advisor may unintentionally give you too much hope. Keep a cool head. 2. Always ask other faculties for external opinion on your case. - Your advisor’s opinion is always biased. Look for more input outside your group. 3. Don’t expect fairness during candidate selection. - Hiring process is subjective by definition. It is done by people with very different views on who is the best. You may put tons of efforts into a research statement only to find out later that no one really reads it. 4. The reality is brutal. - Departments can receive 300-500 candidates per opening. Many have excellent CVs and cool ideas. At top- and mid-rank universities, selection criteria can become extremely questionable (like, who exactly was your PhD advisor? Is your recomm. letter 3 pages long? etc). And there is no need to say “You don’t know anything about it. It’s not like this”. I went through this myself. Many times. Along with many colleagues. Do not expect fairness. See luck as a big factor. Apply broadly but have a backdoor ready. #AcademicTwitter

WHEN I AM OLD When I am old... I will wear soft gray sweatshirts... and a bandana over my silver hair... and I will spend my social security checks on my dogs. I will sit in my house on my well-worn chair and listen to my dogs breathing. I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow... When people come to call, I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs... and talk of them and about them... the ones so beloved of the past and the ones so beloved of today... I will still work hard cleaning after them, mopping and feeding them and whispering their names in a soft loving way. I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat, like a jewel, and I will be an embarrassment to all... especially my family... who have not yet found the peace in being free to have dogs as your best friends... These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall... and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep, to greet you as if you are a God, with warm eyes full of adoring love and hope that you will always stay, I'll hug their big strong necks... I'll kiss their dear sweet heads... and whisper in their very special company... I look in the mirror... and see I am getting old... this is the kind of person I am... and have always been. Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me. Please accept me for who I am. My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives... they love my presence in their lives... When I am old this will be important to me... you will understand when you are old, if you have dogs to love too. ❤️🐾 Author Unknown (DM) Follow Us

Adorable posters promoting kindness to animals from the Great Depression were created by Morgan Dennis (1892-1960), an American artist and writer known for his dog images. These posters were specifically made for the American Humane Association's Be Kind to Animals Week in the 1930s. The commemorative week was first established in 1915 and received support from various renowned artists during its early years. The national organization distributed copies of posters, including those by Dennis, to local branches, allowing them to add their own identifying information at the bottom. Each poster by Dennis showcased a child engaging in a kind act, aligning with the educational approach of the organization. According to the Association's timeline history of the week, Shirley Temple served as the junior chair of the Be Kind to Animals Week commemoration in 1936. This celebrity endorsement further solidified the connection between kindness towards animals and childhood.
