Some Journeys Lead You Back To Where it Began
⚔️🛡
I was 11 years old when I first stepped into Azeroth — and just like that, I was forever changed by the world I found.
Warcraft: Orcs & Humans wasn’t just a game to me. It was a call to adventure. A glimpse into worlds built with purpose, heart, and imagination. It set me down a path I’ve been walking ever since.
Years later, somehow, I would be given the chance to answer that calling — spending 8 epic years at Blizzard Entertainment. There, I stood beside heroes. I learned the craft. I found lifelong friends. I was forged in the fires of creativity, collaboration, and challenge.
And like all who walk the adventurer’s road, I eventually felt the pull to seek new trials — to test myself beyond the safety of familiar walls. The last four years have been filled with battles won and lost, both personal and professional. Facing great challenges with new allies. Lessons learned. Scars earned (some literal). Strength tempered.
And now, the road bends once more. Life has a way of circling back to the places that shaped you — but never in the same way you left them.
I’m honored to share that I will soon return through the mighty gates of Blizzard Entertainment — this time, on a brand new adventure on an unannounced project.
Older now. Steadier. But still that same young dreamer all those years ago — who wondered if he might one day help build worlds like those that first lit the fire.
The call to arms has sounded once again.
And as ever — my answer remains the same:
My hammer is ready.
Light. Strength. Honor.

I've had parts of this written down for a while - but I thought it was about time to document the detailed version of what happened during Balatro development

It looks like we won't make the legal fund goal by the end of November deadline, but any little bit helps. Thank you to everyone who has been donating 🩷

@TheCartelDel Thank you! This trend of having local seniors, outsourcing, and not hiring juniors feels so shortsighted. Who will be the future seniors if we're not training them now? Also, juniors bring fresh energy and ideas that can be super valuable.

Get ready for discourse on this great article:
People might wonder how a 90-person studio can create a full-sized AAA title. Jason hints at this, but the reality is that these teams won't stay 90 people. These studios will rely on hundreds of skilled outsourcers from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chengdu, Manila, Warsaw, Ho Chi Minh, Kuala Lumpur, and Sao Paulo to handle the heavy lifting more cost-effectively. As these countries focus on their own games, (like with Wukong and MGS Delta being largely made in China) we could see a seismic industry shift, leaving Western talent behind. If you don't nurture local junior talent, in lieu of a 90 person studio with only seniors that outsource most of the game, eventually they will be more adept than us in a decade - and perhaps they deserve to be.
