Design isn't self-expression and it's not about what makes you feel good. It's about being obsessively curious about the people you're serving and doing the hard work to make things better for them.

My hot take is that most of us have not adequately processed the trauma of the pandemic. And our sprawling, unprocessed trauma chews away at our brains in myriad ways that make us anxious about why we can’t seem to live our lives as instinctively or as joyously as we did in 2019.

@laura_yarrow Watch all movies & shows you kids can’t or won’t watch. Eat the candy ...all of it. Party hard w/ friends that don’t have kids. Play whatever video games you normally can’t. Bake yourself a cake. Order pizza w/ toppings YOU want. Spa day. D&D w/ adults. Build w/ non-Duplo LEGOs.

Parents: I have lots of child free days between now and 6th December when I start my new job. What should I do?! 🤔😁

Having a moment of excitement/terror at receiving an acceptance for @AIRAANZ_news 2023! I've done a lot of conference talks before, but this is the 1st for my PhD tbh, I don't know what emoji to give this 🥹 #phdlife

@ShekyEspejo @emollick @steveportigal Actually, the body of work has also shown that digital or otherwise substitutes for nature work just as well too. It’s not necessarily about the finding inspiration part, more to do with the beneficial effects of reducing stress which allow you to think more effectively 😉

If you are out of ideas, go for a walk. This paper found walking (whether outdoors or a treadmill) increased key types of creative thinking for over 80% of undergraduates. The reasons are not fully clear, but there seem to be direct effects on the brain. apa.org/pubs/journals/…

And culture change is a long and windy road in my experience…

@ChelseaLarsson Surely there’s a missing principle somewhere here around knowing when to say, hang on we need to act slow, strategically and in a research-driven manner right now?

@ChelseaLarsson So many yes’ to this thread! I wonder though if it’s possible some orgs are set up for a fast shipping speed (at least in terms of design) because they’ve never known anything different. It’s hard to place value on and space for processes you’ve never been privy to… 1/2

@ChelseaLarsson Yes! Sometimes the ‘perfect’ solution is actually terrible too because it’s so dramatically different for your users. Obv depends on context, but perhaps the best long term solution is actually incremental changes to bring users/customers on the journey with you.

In some super exciting career news - I’m moving jobs! 🎉 After a year living and working abroad, I’m moving back home (Newy) and into an industry role. It’s been a privilege to work at an institution as prestigious as UvA, and now I’m looking forward to a new challenge.

@brownorama Oh no…. I mean, really though? Is it any wonder orgs and stakeholders have no clue what we do - even within our profession we can’t make our mind up 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Sarahrcyb @LindaSkitka I finished my PhD in IS in 2021 and am currently working in federal gov. Would love to get involved if possible, the non-academic career pathway is something I’m very passionate about. Too many of my lab colleagues had no idea of their value outside academia!

Does anyone in my corner of Twitter know someone who completed their PhD (in the last 5 years ideally) and then joined the public service? I am putting together a panel on alternative academic careers and would love for you to share your story with my fellow ECRs/PhDs.

@JemimahIrvin Love it Jem. We teach our son the same thing. He often just says no, and I’m so proud of all the people in our lives honouring his boundaries.

At the prompting of one sister when her kids were young, we began to give the kids the option to say no to hugs. “Hug, wave or high five?” is a standard question, and I love seeing the kids feeling comfortable saying no. #consent
