This is my brother Erik. He’s 31, has autism and Down syndrome, and lives in a group home. He is nonverbal and will never pay taxes. I personally would like to know what causes autism and why autism rates have been increasing. This should not make you mad.

Am I the asshole for being annoyed at the increase of people self diagnosing ADHD and Autism? It’s almost like claiming to be “neurodivergent” has become a new way for people to avoid accountability.

People are making fun of him but that is, as often, class blindness. The guy lists “existentialism and video games” as his hobbies and is posting this on reddit – so he’s highly probably from a pretty deep working class background. Probably got stuck in the wrong status hierarchies in school, had nobody to teach him better, ended up in a job going nowhere and blocked off from assortative matching forever at 27. Evidently he’s trying to change that by signaling depth online, which can literally be the only rescue for someone like that, so his heart is still in the right place – but he ends up signaling in exactly the ways that high-status educated people will find gauche – so naturally he fails. He’ll keep trying and failing and as before, nobody will be there to teach him better. Eventually he will give up. That is all pretty sad, and it's all through no fault of his own!
