US fertility reached 1.57 last year, the lowest ever recorded, and the WSJ explanation is "uncertainty about finances, relationship stability, and the political climate" my great grandma had eleven children during the second world war, in a country being bombed, in a house with no running water, on rations. poor people have always had kids. the poorest people on earth right now still have kids and the financial excuse is a story we tell ourselves because it makes us feel good and the real one is unbearable the real mechanism is that we got rich enough to redefine children as an expense instead of the point. somewhere in the last fifty years the cultural goal inverted and a child stopped being what life is for and became a line item competing with the lifestyle. once you frame it that way the math never works, because the math isnt supposed to work. that's the point we are living in the richest moment in human history and we decided to use the surplus to buy ourselves out of the future. the most prosperous civilization that has ever existed is committing demographic suicide at the altar of personal optimization and comfort, and the official line is that we cant afford it the birthrate is a lagging indicator of a civilization that forgot why it was alive

@ask1087 @MeghanEMurphy @SPQRRestituor but you asked if i knew women who left cheaters for less successful men, which i do. i feel like this just keeps getting more niche and less generally applicable. most of this doesnt really apply to middle/upper middle class people

@Plentyshit Context: Sharon Horgan and Frank Bruno appeared together in a comedic sketch for the 'pilot show' from the early 2000s, where Bruno offered humorous "advice" on women's issues to Horgan. FYI for those offended 😀

@itachikarin @MeghanEMurphy @SPQRRestituor Firefighters and construction workers aren’t “betas” or losers. Do you know women who refused to share their hyper successful husbands and then married a “beta” or loser afterwards?

@ask1087 @MeghanEMurphy @SPQRRestituor i mean, i know several. one is dating a firefighter who makes less than her, another is dating a retired construction worker. some just stay single. i think there are a lot of good men who aren't hyper sexual cheaters or "losers," so most women dont have to choose

@itachikarin @MeghanEMurphy @SPQRRestituor He’s claiming that they prefer it to being with a “beta” (loser). I don’t know many women who are married to very successful men who leave them for far less successful men, even after infidelity. Do you?

@ask1087 @MeghanEMurphy @SPQRRestituor cant imagine it for myself, but i can see why someone (man or woman) would stay with a cheating spouse if they have kids. i dont think they stay because they like it or it feels good, though. i dont necessarily think that more successful people are likelier to be cheaters, either

@MeghanEMurphy @itachikarin @SPQRRestituor It’s mostly not like that because most women don’t have a Sophie’s Choice like that. Do you think it’s untrue that lots of elite men sleep with lots of people who aren’t their wives and that their wives probably know about it and prefer to stay.

@itachikarin @SPQRRestituor @MeghanEMurphy It’s a play on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. He claims that one is preferable to the other. It’s not as controversial when you think about it. Even if you disagree with it.

@ask1087 @SPQRRestituor @MeghanEMurphy hmm i guess im stuck on the limitations? i dont think cheating or helping someone else cheat should ever be an option (unless youre trashy). i think a lot of men really do like hot, bossy women! but i do know a lot of very sweet girls who are happily married as well.

@itachikarin @SPQRRestituor @MeghanEMurphy Going back to Rollo’s tweet, it’s not really about what women are looking for, but more what he claims they generally choose when presented with two limited alternatives. A bit like “men would rather a not v sexy but kind wife as opposed to a sexy & mean wife.”

@BeatrixdeSol @babyblueice22 @SLC21BA @MeghanEMurphy @AllyRealityally Do you mean the people who claim that most women leave men and try to monkey branch? I don’t think those people are common and they’re mega online. Hypergamy is evolutionarily advantageous. Hugely. But disadvantageous if the woman looks so long that she doesn’t ever reproduce.

@ask1087 @babyblueice22 @SLC21BA @MeghanEMurphy @AllyRealityally right. yea thats very low brow and lazy. i mean the people who say that are basically the very notion of what they think an incel is. that said, people who use 'hypergamy' to rule out marriage and women as evil are doing it too. twitter really has the full spectrum

@BeatrixdeSol @babyblueice22 @SLC21BA @MeghanEMurphy @AllyRealityally I genuinely think this is exactly the point of people mentioning it. They want to go back and undo what’s changed. But if people continue to claim that all the fuss is just incels or ugly people then nothing will change. I don’t want my son and daughter growing up into this.

@BeatrixdeSol @babyblueice22 @SLC21BA @MeghanEMurphy @AllyRealityally Because that is far less common and meeting online is far more common, women are becoming more hypergamous. Because they can. This isn’t even a moral condemnation, it’s merely a description of reality. Far more women in their 30s I know now claim that there are no good men left

@BeatrixdeSol @babyblueice22 @SLC21BA @MeghanEMurphy @AllyRealityally Assertive mating is the default when there are options limited by geography and lack of technology. The more social media and dating apps have become prevalent, the more it is lost. I met my wife in a bar on a student night 20 years ago. I don’t think that is as common anymore.

@Anglo_Angeland @TalkTV @JuliaHB1 Lots of people of all colours say that and it’s apparently not an issue. Kanye West lost a huge amount of money and deals over his statements. He hasn’t had a free pass as JHB is saying.
