Neteyam adjusted his backpack strap as he hurried down the stairs of his building. He turned the corner and saw Aonung waiting for him, as he had every day for the past two years. He was leaning against the concrete wall, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket, his long curls barely held back in a half-up ponytail. Neteyam smiled, and Aonung returned it with that familiar warmth in his eyes. "You're late." Aonung teased, the usual crooked smirk tugging at his lips. "Only two minutes, don't be dramatic." Neteyam replied, bumping his shoulder against his friend's in their usual affectionate greeting. They headed to campus together, crossing the pedestrian bridge that spanned the massive highway: a necessary shortcut to save time. Ever since they'd discovered they lived just two blocks apart, they'd been taking this walk together every day, even though their classes were in different buildings. Two years of silly conversations, complaining about teachers, sharing their earphones… And two years of Neteyam swallowing everything he felt for Aonung in silence, hiding his feelings so well that, sometimes, the weight of his own lie threatened to crush him. He had watched Aonung flirt with girls countless times: in the cafeteria, at college parties, in the hallways. Never with guys. Never with him. Aonung only ever seemed interested in women, and that was enough reason for Neteyam to stay quiet. No matter how much he wanted… He knew he didn’t stand a chance. Friends, just that. And every morning, Neteyam reminded himself it was enough. That morning, the sky was darker than usual, thick clouds swallowing it completely, while the wind picked up, tossing Aonung's curls and sending Neteyam’s scarf fluttering around his neck. By the time they reached the middle of the bridge, the only sound was the constant roar of cars rushing beneath them, making the concrete platform tremble slightly. Strong, cold gusts swept across the bridge, lifting dust and a few dry leaves. "There's a storm coming, I saw it on the news." Aonung said, glancing up at the sky and narrowing his eyes. A single raindrop landed on his cheek. "We should hurry before it catches us on the bridge." Neteyam nodded, but his mind wasn't on the weather. For days, the same image had been burned into his mind: a girl walking beside Aonung, clinging to his arm, the two of them leaving college together, laughing like they shared a private joke. He'd seen them all week. And every time, it felt as if his chest were being squeezed mercilessly. Even if the answer crushed him, he had to ask. He needed to close the door, to finally kill the stupid hope he'd been carrying around for years. To accept that everything he felt was one-sided and pathetic after all this time as friends. "Hey… Aonung, that girl who's been hanging around with you lately… Is she—?" He didn't get to finish. A sudden gust of wind tore the scarf from around his neck. The thick wool flew upward, fluttering like a clumsy bird. Neteyam let out a startled sound and reached for it too late. Aonung reacted faster, stepping forward and catching it before the wind could carry it away. They both froze for a second, staring at each other. Then burst out laughing. Neteyam hid his face in his hands, completely embarrassed, while the cold began to bite at his now-bare neck. "Fuck, I'm an idiot." he muttered between laughs. Aonung shook out the scarf and took one step closer, standing right in front of him, the smile still bright on his face. "Come here, you dummy." People rushed past them from all sides: students with their hoods up, workers shielding their heads with briefcases, everyone trying to escape the sky that was already letting the first drops fall. But the two of them stood their ground in the middle of the bridge, as if the rest of the world had chosen to move on without them. Neteyam tried to answer back, but the cold had already crept into his bones, and his teeth chattered uncontrollably. Aonung noticed immediately; the teasing in his expression melted away, replaced by genuine concern. Without a word, he lifted the scarf and carefully looped it around Neteyam's neck. His fingers traced the cold skin at the back of his neck, then slowly slid down the soft knit, adjusting it with care. They were so close that Neteyam could feel the warmth radiating from Aonung's body, could smell the morning coffee on his breath and the cheap cologne he always wore. "Weren't you saying something?" Aonung asked, raising his voice just enough to carry over the whistling wind and roaring traffic. "I didn't hear you, sorry." Neteyam looked up into Aonung’s blue eyes, focused entirely on him, following every little motion. He swallowed hard, licking his dry lips. "Oh… Yeah… That girl who's been hanging around you lately…" he started, his voice low and shaky while Aonung finished wrapping the warm fabric around him. "Is she your—?" The words died in his throat again. Aonung's fingers left the scarf and moved upward. With a surprising tenderness, he brushed his thumb across Neteyam's cheekbone, tracing the cold, sun-kissed skin. The sudden touch left Neteyam speechless, lips still parted, waiting for words that never came. They stayed that way for a moment that seemed to stretch forever. Their hearts pounding, their chests nearly brushing, as the rain began falling harder around them. Yet the rain didn't matter to either of them. Then Aonung leaned in and kissed him. It was quick at first, almost impulsive, as if he couldn't hold back any longer. His dry, slightly rough lips brushed against Neteyam's. And Neteyam didn't pull away, didn't push him back. Didn't say a single word. Aonung leaned back ever so slightly, his gaze seeking permission in Neteyam's eyes he didn't really need. When all he saw was Neteyam staring back with parted lips and no hint of disgust, he kissed him again. This time it was deeper, more confident. His hands slid gently to the back of Neteyam's neck, bringing him closer, their bodies pressing against one another. Neteyam finally snapped out of his daze and kissed him back, clumsy at first from the surprise, but his body understood before his mind did. He pressed against him almost instinctively, as if he had always known where he belonged. His hands, unsure at first, ended up clutching the front of Aonung's jacket, creasing the fabric. Aonung held him tighter in his strong arms, kissing him with such open adoration that Neteyam's knees buckled for a moment. When they finally broke apart, just enough to catch their breath, the rain poured harder around them on the bridge, but neither of them moved. Neteyam stared at him, dazed, lips swollen, heart pounding so fiercely he was certain Aonung could feel it against his chest. "Don't ask any more stupid questions." Aonung whispered against his lips, his voice rough and slightly unsteady. Neteyam chuckled softly. Aonung smiled back, one of his hands finding Neteyam's waist, caressing it gently. "I'll keep that in mind." #aonunete — 💙/ 1,357 words.
