In general, the self-driving has become almost magical, far beyond what a camera-only system should be able to accomplish. Things like its driving into a metal post or, reportedly, a white truck at speed make those limitations all too clear.

Tesla has reviewed the accident and stands firmly behind their disclaimer for any liability arising from being foolish enough to expect the car to brake before running into stuff. They, further, were completely uninterested in hearing why the accident occurred.

The problem is the lack of radar or lidar. What made this time different was that the car perfectly aligned itself very early on, so it was going straight backwards. The single camera, therefore, had no parallax shift to give it a means to generate a 3D model of the post.

Tesla claims I should have reacted within that second to stop the car. The car had parked in that same spot more than 5 times before, so I assumed it would brake at the end of the spot as it had before.

My Tesla Model S Plaid using Autopark drove itself into a post. If your Tesla is backing into a parking space, take control several feet before it is fully in place. The car appeared to be operating normally until less than a second before it continued backward into the post.

@jillithd Millions of Apple IIs shipped with anywhere from 4k of RAM to 48k, but no more, with vast numbers sold with 16k, pretty standard for many years. Only much later could Apple IIs support more than 48k. If the 10.304 TB number is based on all having 64K, it is significantly off.

Hawaii debacle due to grossly ignorant & incompetent design, not operator "human error." At least three, prob four or more blunders the most raw new HCI designer would never make. Operators were “set up” to fail and deserve an apology, along with the people of Hawaii.
