@Keir_Starmer, your own government clearly stated these tariff suspensions were introduced to help British households manage rising food prices during the cost of living crisis. Tuna was simply one item among many included in a broader UK domestic economic measure. This was not a Maldives exclusive trade concession. So why is the British High Commissioner helping create the misleading impression that this was some special diplomatic victory achieved by Maldivian politicians? If all tuna exporters benefit from the same tariff suspension, then the competitive advantage for Maldives remains limited. At the same time, Maldivian fishermen continue facing rising fuel, transport, and operational costs which significantly reduce the real economic gain. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging cooperation between governments. But public officials and diplomats should communicate policy honestly instead of encouraging political spin and exaggerated narratives. The public today can read policy documents and understand the difference between a broad UK consumer protection measure and a country specific trade agreement. #TimesAreAChangin @10downingstreet @FCDOGovUK @guardian @thesundaytimes @PrivateEyeNews

Great news for British shoppers and Maldivian fishermen. The UK is suspending tariffs on tuna, helping bring prices down in the UK while opening better market access for Maldivian tuna. A win for affordability and sustainable tuna, caught one fish at a time. 🎣🐟 shorturl.at/4ombH

Now I understand why so many accusations against this government keep surfacing. When leaders openly mislead the public and take credit for things they did not achieve, people start questioning everything else too. If tariffs are suspended for everyone, the competitive position largely stays the same because all exporters benefit equally. Maldivian tuna does not suddenly become cheaper or more competitive overnight, especially when our production and logistics costs are already higher than many competitors. @MMuizzu, you are misleading people and taking credit for something your government did not achieve. The UK tariff suspension was not created only for the Maldives, but your post makes it sound like it was some major diplomatic victory by your government. This is exactly the kind of political deception that destroys public trust. #shame #shameless

I warmly welcome the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on tuna imports effective 20th May 2026. This important development will support British consumers while delivering meaningful benefits to the Maldives’ fisheries sector, strengthening fishermen’s incomes, supporting island livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna in the UK market. The Maldives is globally recognised for its world-leading pole-and-line tuna industry and its commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing practices. This milestone reflects the close partnership between the Maldives and the UK and the importance both countries place on sustainable trade and economic resilience. I thank the UK Government and all partners who contributed to this positive step forward for our fishermen and our economy. 🇲🇻🇬🇧

Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem publicly stated that MNDF rescue divers were not trained for dives below 50m, and that the mission was carried out using normal air, putting divers at significant risk. That statement matters. It sounded like someone wanting to ensure the facts were on record, while also signalling concern about the pressure surrounding the operation and the risks faced by personnel under his command. At the same time, in December 2024, Japan officially gifted the Maldives Coast Guard advanced maritime communication systems, professional diving gear, and search and rescue equipment, including portable recompression chambers, according to Ishigami Rumiko @JapanAmbMV. So the public deserves answers @MMuizzu Were these systems and diving assets operational during the recent recovery mission? If so, why was normal air reportedly used for a technical deep dive? Were the divers properly equipped and supported for that depth? What operational or political pressures existed during the mission? Why was President Mohamed Muizzu personally present at the incident site during such a sensitive operation? These are not anti government questions. These are accountability, transparency, and safety questions. The media should ask them properly. The public deserves clear answers, not silence, deflection, or attempts to shut down legitimate questioning (the usual gag orders). @MoDmv @MNDF_Official @BBCWorld @mundhu_maldives @ShafrazNaeem @MoFAmv @nypost @skynews @mamboitaliano_ @cnni @AdhadhuMV @raajjemv @mihaarunews @psmnewsmv

First comes the accusation. Investigative journalism and police find evidence, then comes the court process. If those in power manipulate this, justice dies. Abuse, rape, and adultery lack witnesses. Evidence is rare. Maldivian authorities have limited investigative capabilities. Look at our unsolved murders and disappearances. If we cannot solve those, finding evidence for elite sex scandals is impossible. This is the reality of Maldives. It means we cannot just depend on the police, sorry to say. We need independent media and journalists to dig out the facts that authorities miss or ignore. We cannot silence victims or media with defamation suits to protect the elite. Defamation suits should follow once accusations are proven false in court—the accused and supporters calling it a lie means nothing. Let the process work. Let truth win.

Everyone sounds like a financial expert because access to information is easy. Understanding is not. We have created a culture where titles are mistaken for capability. A master’s or PhD shows depth in a narrow area, not expertise across everything. Knowledge does not equal certification. Yet many present opinions as expertise. Real expertise is simple. Knowledge, experience, and outcomes you can point to. Without real world results, it is still theory. On X, most content is opinion, not expertise. Even when it comes from experts 🤣.

The real question is simple. Is there a market in India for us to export water jets? India has scale, cost advantage, and strong local manufacturing. Competing on price at volume will be tough. So the opportunity, if any, is in high value, specialised segments where NZ has a clear edge and can outperform global competitors. Otherwise, who exactly are we expecting to sell to?

We are running out of USD. That means fuel, food, and essentials will become more expensive, and very soon we may not be able to pay for them at all. This is not a future risk. It is already happening. Maldives economy is under real pressure. We earn USD mainly from tourism, but we are spending more than we earn. When USD is scarce, the value of MVR falls, which means higher prices for everything we import. The truth is MVR only has value, only if we have enough USD behind it, and much of our economy already runs on USD, which makes MVR even weaker. Now add global risks. Any escalation around Iran pushes fuel prices up, increases shipping costs, disrupts flights, and reduces tourism demand, and we are already heading into the low season. On top of that, we have external debts due in the coming months, our credit rating is already in junk territory, and we are relying on temporary support like the India currency swap to stay afloat. This is no joke. If we continue to hide the problem, there will not be enough USD for basic needs. Students studying abroad may not receive funds, Maldivians living overseas depending on money from home will not get funds, and businesses including resorts already under heavy debt could start failing. Right now, subsidies and policies are hiding the problem, not fixing it, while precious funds are being wasted on unnecessary political spending. The government must stop sugar coating it. Winter is not coming, it is already here. Put political interests aside and make the hard choices. Yes, people will be upset and the government will be blamed, but if the situation is explained honestly, there will be people who respect that leadership for years to come. Act now by cutting waste, reducing unsustainable subsidies, increasing revenue, and diversifying beyond tourism. If we delay, MVR will weaken further and daily life will become harder. We have seen this before in Sri Lanka. This is not about politics, it is about protecting the country before it is too late. @MMuizzu @em_saeed @MoosaZameer

Partly agree that floating exchange rates make sense in the long term because they reflect real market conditions and improve transparency. But in Maldives today, the key risk is the speed of adjustment. MVR would likely fall quickly because demand for USD is high while demand for MVR is low. In an import dependent economy, that would immediately raise the cost of fuel, food, and essentials. At the same time, we rely on broad subsidies that are already hard to sustain. A sudden shift would either expand subsidies further, risking more money printing and inflation, or remove them abruptly, sharply increasing the cost of living. Either way, it creates serious stress. In simple terms, the adjustment would be too fast and could trigger a wider economic crisis within weeks or months. A floating rate may be right in the long run, but only after strengthening the fundamentals. That means increasing revenue, building exports, reducing subsidies, and diversifying beyond tourism. In short, we need to increase real demand for MVR and bring it closer to USD demand. Without that, the risk is not stability, but a rapid economic shock. Having said that, a crisis is likely to come. The difference is timing. The current system is only delaying the adjustment. If fiscal policy does not change, the pressure will keep building and the eventual exchange rate correction will be more severe. But if the government acts now to improve revenue, control spending, and reduce on subsidies, there is still a window to manage the transition and limit the impact. So this is not just about the exchange rate. It is about whether we act early and shape the outcome, or delay and face a much harsher correction later.

In the current financial & economic situation of the Maldives it may be worth considering allowing the exchange rate to float more in line with market forces. While experts suggest that such a move could bring short-term challenges, it would also help align the official rate with real market conditions. Given the current distortions, the level of adjustment may not be significantly worse than what is already being experienced in the country and could potentially lead to a more stable and transparent system in the long run in Maldives.

@sunbrk Fuel subsidies will help in the short term. But who pays the real cost? More fuel imports, more fiscal pressure, and long term dependency. We have seen how similar paths played out in Sri Lanka. Are we solving the problem or just delaying it?
