The project would span more than 260 acres along the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world. More than 3.7 million people have signed a petition calling for the project to be stopped, warning it could put protected mangroves, coral reefs, sea turtle nesting grounds, and fragile marine ecosystems at risk. The petition also calls for a full environmental review and a broader public debate about the future of tourism development in Mexico. This week, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would fight to protect the reef.
