The astronauts. Their ride around the Moon. The Artemis II astronauts pose for a group photo after viewing their Orion spacecraft — which they named Integrity — in the well deck of USS John P. Murtha following their splashdown.

Make new friends, but keep the old. A new photo captures the Moon's near side on the right (the side we see from Earth, identifiable by its dark splotches) and its far side on the left. The Artemis II crew are the first to see the far side with human eyes.

One last look at Earth before we reach the Moon. This view of the Earth was captured on April 5, the fourth day of the Artemis II mission, from inside the Orion spacecraft. The four astronauts will reach their closest approach of the Moon tomorrow, April 6.

Orion’s high-Earth orbit will reach about 44,000 miles, compared to the @Space_Station’s low-Earth orbit of 250 miles. Keep an eye out for some pretty spectacular images of our home planet!

Signal acquired! 📡 Engineers at @NASAJPL have confirmed that the Orion spacecraft is communicating with the Deep Space Network. For the first time in over 50 years, we’re receiving a signal from a spacecraft carrying humans toward the Moon.

Losing comms in space is uncomfortable. That voice in your ear from Mission Control forms a strong psychological connection to Earth - when it disappears, there is a sudden realization of just how far you are from home. Luckily, there is a network for that.
NASA's Johnson Space Center@NASA_Johnson

Because the astronauts are traveling so far, a series of Earth-based satellites known as the Deep Space Network help keep us connected to our Moon-bound crew. Did you know you can see those connections happening real-time? You can see which satellites are communicating with Orion by visiting: go.nasa.gov/4m6vnHP

For the first time in over 50 years, humans are Moonbound. At 6:35 p.m. EDT (2235 UTC) NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft lifted off from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending four astronauts on a planned test flight around the Moon and back. go.nasa.gov/4tlRfRS
