@astrojml @EveryF_ingTime @CuriosityonX The foundational uniformity of the universe, for starters, but you already know this.
English

@Nostradumb_ss @EveryF_ingTime @CuriosityonX What specifically is assumed when measuring stellar distances?
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@Nostradumb_ss @EveryF_ingTime @CuriosityonX Btw you failed to answer the question you were asked.
What specifically is assumed when measuring stellar distances like the 99 light year one for this star?
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@EveryF_ingTime @astrojml @CuriosityonX Measuring these vast distances absolutely relies on assumptions.
How could they not? We're talking about things supposedly 580 trillion miles away. Reason alone would be sufficient, but beyond that it is known.
English

@Nostradumb_ss @EveryF_ingTime @CuriosityonX Don't make deliberately ignorant claims then you won't be corrected. Simple
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @EveryF_ingTime @CuriosityonX Sad, but not surprising, that we went from a mostly civil exchange to this. I guess you needed a prompt to make it okay.
Let's hope that ladder has no false rungs.
English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX Read my above comments nice and slowly. You got this buddy
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX And yet you refrain from going all-in at "100%, absolutely irrefutable, it is an established fact beyond all doubt. It can never be falsified."
And I am lying. Fascinating.
English

@aMUSED328 @konstructivizm That wasn't a question
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@EmperorStote @latestinspace Thankfully corrected. Petzvals are known for their nice pinprick stars all across the image circle

South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@EmperorStote @latestinspace My primary scope is a petzval refractor

@astrojml @latestinspace Ask properly. Who the fuck do you think you are? I have a choice in everything in life. Go play with your telescope.
Does it have a convex on concave lens?
English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX Between the 2 camps, I'm in the "not a sign of life" side since there's WAY more evidence for that side. In some cases we can ABSOLUTELY know.
This is perhaps the best recent example of your "no one can check/falsify" claim being a complete lie
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX Right. And a few years ago, I likely would have been highly skeptical of that "life on K2-18b" claim.
Because we cannot possibly know. And today I don't trust this "all but disproven" claim. Because we cannot possibly know.
But I do appreciate all guesses.
English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX Again, no one except unfortunately the OP is presenting it as a solidified fact. Read the actual research on this thing
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX Oh, I'm fully aware, friend.
I'm all in favor of best guesses not presented as facts.
English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX On Earth, DMS (the chemical the initial team claimed to detect) is a known biosignature. It is only naturally produced by life. Known fact.
Finding it in an exoplanet atmosphere is a POSSIBLE sign of life, but isnt super robust since its been found elsewhere in space since
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX I suggest reading the actual papers from the people studying these planets day to day. Don't get your science from social media, and especially not Twitter
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@Nostradumb_ss @CuriosityonX Not does measuring stellar distances like this
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @CuriosityonX The difference between the tape measure I use to measure and the one used to measure things trillions of miles away is my tape measure relies on no assumptions.
English

@yahweh83enigma @konstructivizm Easy way to measure the sun's 93 million mile distance
1: 2 observers photograph Venus simultaneously to measure its distance via parallax
2. Measure the separation between the sun and Venus
3: use trig to solve for the sun's distance
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@EmperorStote @latestinspace You weren't given a choice. Get to it
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @latestinspace Get to typing LOL. Sorry, you sound like a child. I do not talk to children on social media. Bye.
English

@yahweh83enigma @konstructivizm You've done a shit job proving otherwise thus far
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@Nostradumb_ss @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX "All but disproven" because besides the 1 team that initially made the claim, literally no one else has reproduced it to any confident degree, especially not at the levels the initial team claimed.
Doesn't necessarily equal disproven, but sure as shit not supported
South Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 English

@astrojml @BarryR32810870 @CuriosityonX "All but disproven."
Is that a phrase straight out of the official astrophysics guidebook?
English
