I am an unconventional cosmochemist and an exoplanetologist, thrilling to finding habitable exo-Earths, among which one may be called Planet Matilda.

@mshelenashcroft @gepugg Coming to Switzerland! The distance between people and the time shrinking in distance (due to the train system) will reward you a calming atmosphere, which you might need.

I'm alive today because a stranger once generously left me their heart valve. The Organ & Tissue Authority (created from the 2020 Summit) has done great work doubling the donation rate. But Covid has hit hard. Please consider registering at donatelife.gov.au #DonateLifeWeek

I was pleased to outline Managed Strategic Competition to a Chinese audience at a @Tsinghua_Uni online forum this month. I’ve spoken a lot in the US but my book #TheAvoidableWar is not sold in China. So I’m glad to see the speech picked up by local media. kevinrudd.com/media/preservi…

ETH astrophysicists Haiyang Wang, Sascha Quanz and Fabian Seidler as well as Paolo Sossi at the Department of Earth Sciences, reported a hypothetical rocky planet in the habitable zone of the α Centauri A/B system (an Earth-like planet). i-science.net/2022/03/imagin…

We do not yet know whether the Sun-like stars closest to us, the α Centauri A/B binary, harbour an Earth-like planet. But thanks to modelling work by @ETH_en researchers we now have a good sense of what such a planet would look like, should it exist. 🧵 phys.ethz.ch/news-and-event…

@RanaArafat12 @AcademicChatter I have been in such a situation for many times. I found if I put away writing for 2-3 days and start a topic-focused READING (with thinking) I will go through the writing block more naturally and quickly. At least, you'll have your minds refreshed or even retrained.

My new routine as an international postdoc applicant: 1. Wake up, 2. Identify new postdoc funding 3. Get hopes high 4. Check eligibility 5. Note it's only for PRs and citizens. 6. Sleep 7. Repeat #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter

@rach_scottie @AcademicChatter The speed of baby development will be most likely faster than your paper publications. If someone would reserve time for the sake of travelling/publication potential, you would most likely end up nothing.

@AcademicChatter But also to say that you will need to be realistic abt what you'll be able to achieve. It will impact your ability to travel (if required for your post) in the same way, e.g. for research or to attend conferences, and attend evening seminars etc.

Anonymous question "I'm an ECR, just over 1 year out of my PhD. I've got less than 2 years left on my contract & kind of need to think about having a baby now. Everyone I've spoken to talks about it like I'd be ending my career. How did you get through it? I feel really alone."

Am I the only one that feels deeply uncomfortable when someone uses the word "foreigner" to describe a person? it has a strong "othering" effect and it comes across as chilling to me, dehumanising.

@rachelohry @bethpenrose @AcademicChatter I was advised by my previous supervisor that it's almost illegal to let others read a manuscript that is still under your review. But not sure if this could be generalised to different scenarios/fields. Just be cautious!

How do I moderate my opinions/reviews? This week, I wasn't supportive of a manuscript & an already-accepted paper (which I think should be retracted & revised). The latter had coauthors whom I'm familiar with. Perhaps my bar is just unreasonably high...?😐 @AcademicChatter

Question for #AcademicTwitter 🤓 Has anyone paid for a Grammarly premium subscription and would you recommend? First year PGR and wondering if it will be a worthwhile investment, or does Word do a good enough job? Is there really a difference? @AcademicChatter #AcademicChatter
