Gloomy news for press freedom around the world, including a “significant and prolonged decline” in the United States, which now ranks 64th out of 180 countries surveyed in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index. #SaveVOA @ClaytonWeimers @RSF_en

An interesting sidebar to the #IranWar‌. Pakistan has been struggling for years to jump start the use of Gwadar port but has faced hurdles due to its location in Balochistan and subsequent security challenges, as well as planning and infrastructure issues.
The Diplomat@Diplomat_APAC

So far in April, Gwadar has handled around 11,000 standard shipping containers. For a port that handled around 8,300 containers in all of 2025 and historically has not seen more than 20 ships dock in an entire year, the current activity is unprecedented. buff.ly/jvVRB9T

The Witkof Kushner cancellation is not the chest thumping tragic end to the talks that many are assuming. The Iranians were fairly explicit that these would be bilateral talks. They dont even like the two. There is intense diplomacy at play this weekend.

While talks between the U.S. & Iran in Islamabad did not yield an immediate result, they cannot be labeled as having failed or broken down either--at least not yet. That the two sides met face to face was a significant step. If the fragile cease fire holds, there will be hope.

Bravo to the bravery of these VOA journalists suing the Trump Administration. It not only underscores the editorial independence VOA always had until last year — it's also a reminder many VOA reporters came from autocracies — they know the fight. npr.org/2026/03/23/nx-…

U.S. denies Iranian claims to have hit USS Abraham Lincoln. In a separate development, Centcom says three U.S. service members killed and several other seriously wounded in this conflict but withheld details of where it happened.
U.S. Central Command@CENTCOM

🚫Iran’s IRGC claims to have struck USS Abraham Lincoln with ballistic missiles. LIE. ✅The Lincoln was not hit. The missiles launched didn’t even come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime.

CENTCOM Update TAMPA, Fla. – As of 9:30 am ET, March 1, three U.S. service members have been killed in action and five are seriously wounded as part of Operation Epic Fury. Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions — and are in the process of being returned to duty. Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing. The situation is fluid, so out of respect for the families, we will withhold additional information, including the identities of our fallen warriors, until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
