Lads, you went into the tournament with no fit left back, no idea who plays in midfield, a half-injured captain and top scorer, and a knackered 21 yearold being asked to hold it all together. Getting to the final and losing to the best team in the tournament is not actually bad?

I think both these things can be true: 1) Gareth Southgate has a quite brilliant record as England manager. It makes him pretty much unimpeachable. 2) He’s not a very top level manager and it shows when the chips are down. FWIW I just about think four tournaments is enough now.
