Not every remarkable journey is loud — some are built quietly through consistency and curiosity. In our Celebrating Amazing Women series this March, we’re featuring Shafiqa Iqbal, currently working at Google as a Software Engineer / Site Reliability Engineer. Here’s her journey in her own words: “My journey has been mostly very simple. Nothing too exciting. I graduated from PUCIT (Punjab University College of Information Technology) and then worked for about one and a half years in Pakistan at local companies. Alongside that, I was freelancing to learn extra skills. I would do freelance work at night sometimes, or on weekends, just to keep learning. After that, I was approached by Google for interviews and eventually joined the company. It has been almost four and a half years now, this August it will be five years. In these years I’ve learned a lot and moved across different teams. I’ve changed teams three times because I always wanted to keep learning and growing. Whenever I felt there wasn’t enough growth in a team, I decided to move on and try something new. Currently I work as a Software Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer. Earlier I worked as a Data Engineer and a Big Data Solutions Engineer. After that I moved to GKE as a Software Engineer, and now I work on an internal system at Google called Borg.” Her message is simple but powerful: “Working in tech, problem solving, engineering — it should all be normalized for women. I personally don’t like when people say things like ‘You’re the first Pakistani woman in this office’ or make it sound like such a big deal. Women from Pakistan are already doing incredible work, both in Pakistan and abroad. They’re just not always in the limelight. I think in the next five or ten years we’ll see so many more women in tech that it will just feel completely normal. Today, I visited Peshawar to meet graduates of @atomcamp's bootcamps. I wanted to follow up and know about their career updates. It was a great pleasure to see many of them doing jobs during their university education. Because they learned real practical skills with us. Some of them have graduated and are now doing jobs as well as building their startups. I found the youth of Peshawar more passionate about learning and making their careers in tech and ai. As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly important for governance and public administration, building AI literacy within the public sector is essential. @atomcamp and @CSAgovPK has developed a training manual for public servants to help them understand Artificial Intelligence and explore how it can be used to build secure AI applications in government systems. The current manual covers AI 101 and AI 201, introducing officers to AI fundamentals, practical tools, prompt engineering, and responsible use of AI in governance. This is the first step in a broader learning pathway. Two additional manuals are being developed to cover more advanced AI concepts and applications for Pakistan’s public sector. 📘 The manual is publicly available.

Yesterday, team atomcamp attended the Youth Climate Catalysts Event hosted by the British High Commission Islamabad and Oxford Policy Management. The event brought together climate champions, youth leaders, and professionals from different industries who are actively working on climate action and sustainability in Pakistan. It was inspiring to hear different perspectives, from using AI to forecast weather patterns to community-led initiatives focused on climate resilience. At atomcamp, sustainability is something we actively explore through our Sustainability Lab, where we work on projects focused on data-driven climate and urban solutions. Some of the work we’ve been doing includes a two-wheeler lane pilot with the Rawalpindi Development Authority aimed at improving safety and encouraging the adoption of electric two-wheelers, as well as urban mobility projects with the Capital Development Authority focused on building more sustainable transport systems. We also conduct training on sustainability reporting and program evaluation, helping organizations use data and AI to measure the effectiveness and impact of their development and climate initiatives. My journey into tech policy wasn’t a career pivot; it was a realization that if we aren’t intentional about the frameworks we build today, we’re just passengers in a world that doesn’t actually know where it’s going. Working at the intersection of tech and policy in this era feels like being a translator for a language that is still evolving in real-time. It’s about more than just "impact" but rather about stewardship. In tech policy, being the only woman in the room means more than representation; it means responsibility. And embracing that responsibility has become one of the most empowering parts of my journey. It is the quiet, high-stakes work of ensuring that, while we’re chasing the next iteration of innovation, we don’t accidentally optimize ourselves out of our own stories.
