I joined Costco today to buy one item. Just. One. Item.
I didn’t even make it past the first display on the other side of the welcome door. Toothpaste. The kind I like. $25 for five packs.
I left with $500 worth of items.
They sell gas. The line was so long it looked like what I see when I’m covering a hurricane and the storm is about to make landfall and people are scrambling to get the last bit of fuel. Is Costco giving it away for free? 😳
The shopping cart was so big I could’ve slept in it.
I pulled into the parking lot and thought there was a concert I wasn’t aware of.
I needed to get in and out. I was in there for an hour and 20 minutes.
This is not normal behavior. 🤣

@PriouxSebastien @laowai_shanghai Chinese-born but not Chinese national wasn’t very useful for us haha. At least we have WeChat privileges now 😊

@laowai_shanghai Having a chinese-born partner has its advantages. The immigration control is particularly long at Pudong International Airport, but it's nothing compared to some other big international airports in the US ...

International arrivals at the #Shanghai Pudong International Airport are definitely normalizing: It was massively crowded! Thanks to my Chinese wife and mixed-national daughter, I could avoid waiting for hours in the foreigner queue and use the lane for Chinese nationals. (1/2)

@PriouxSebastien @joecarlsonshow Ha! Good idea but wrong terminology— at Costco one does not spend, they save. Semantics matter 😜
Costco est aussi mon amour…

@joecarlsonshow @attorneycat . Invest at Costco, don't only spend ...

$TGT Target saw a 120% increase in theft. They are expected to lose over $1.3 billion in theft this year. That's money straight out of the investor's pockets.
$COST Costco on the other hand has so far avoided any rise in theft, why? First, single entrance, single exit. Every receipt is checked at the exit. The items are large and bulky, difficult to hide, and if you do steal something, you can permanently lose your membership. They check your ID at checkout now as well.
I love that Costco protects the profits of shareholders by making theft very difficult.

Dear @WeChatApp
I am copying the message I just sent to your customer service.
We are an organisation that delivers study tours to China. Our groups have 15-20 participants. During our tour we talk a lot about WeChat and mobile payment and even have a morning of masterclasses about this subject. As such we want to have our groups experience both WeChat and mobile payment.
As a long time user of WeChat I am extremely disappointed in the process of getting our current group registered in WeChat and having them register their credit cards for mobile payment.
Because of the friend verification rules I could only verify 1 user. We had to ask our local Chinese tour operator partner to register the rest of the group for us. They had to arrange one Chinese user for every participant in our group. And we had to simultaneously verify the whole group during our briefing session, with their Chinese counterparts staying up late to fill in the Dutch phone numbers. An absolutely ridiculous situation...
Now that we finally have everybody verified, after many, many error messages in the process, we have shared Tencent's own instructions on activating Weixin Pay and linking their credit cards. One by one they all failed, being told that the name on their credit card doesn't match one of the names entered elsewhere in the process. Its absolutely unclear if this is the alias, the real-name verification or the passport name. But nobody can register and we've had to tell our group they better try Alipay instead.
Not only is this a frustrating situation, it also reflects really badly on your company and products. And in a time that China needs its tourists and business visitors, you are not helping.
As a matter of fact, when we asked your customer service for help in the registration process and friend verification we basically were ignored and told every individual had to contact you if they ran into problems.
A really hope Tencent can one day find a way to make all of this work and find a way to enable foreigners to use an app that has become essential for live in China. Until that day, we will be using your competitors products.
If there is any way to make this process more smooth for our future groups that will visit China I would love to discuss it.
