A complex matter A newspaper leading a ‘commission for NHS reform’ (as if we’ve not had enough reform in the last 30 yrs) An ombudsman (whose job of course is to examine only cases where things appear to have gone wrong) firing a salvo of attacks on senior doctors for their culture, actions & inactions. Yet all around me I see doctors working collaboratively with nurses, AHPs, administrators to keep patients safe in an ever stressed & over burdened service. No room for complacency but much of the safety in the NHS is despite the system not because of it. It is because of senior staff not despite them. Senior doctors, as the main decision makers in the vast majority of clinical settings, take on a burden of responsibility many others do not. They fight daily to deliver best care for individuals & to improve patient safety systemically. Many junior doctors look above & for a multitude of reasons don’t like what they see & are moving on elsewhere. And yes of course there will be poor performance & poor performers among senior doctors which we must seek to identify & improve but vilifying an entire senior layer of a profession when the system is at a breaking point is perhaps missing the point. thetimes.co.uk/article/toxic-…

On the 6th October 2023 I shared a link on X to a Mail Online article entitled ‘Militant union leader at the heart of doctors strikes is a Labour activist who boasted of charging the NHS for a strike cover shift. I accept that my words were misleading as the subject in question Dr Tom Dolphin was not on strike on the date of the shift in question but was simply covering a shift as a consultant for junior doctors who were on strike on 11th August 2023. I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to Dr Dolphin for any distress upset caused. I will also like to add that I understand that Dr Dolphin actually donated his pay for the covered shift which I believe was £1870 to the BMA strike fund and whilst I do not agree with the strikes I want to go on the record to say that I think it is a very unselfish act on the part of Dr Dolphin to put his money into something he strongly believes in. I will make the same contribution to compensate the upset I may have caused Dr Dolphin. Please Repost.

I worked through my cancer treatment as I wanted to minimise the impact of my treatment on that of my patients. I am committed to them, my job and the nhs. I will be striking with my consultant colleagues for all the same reasons. #consultantstrikes #NHS #westandtogether

Message for jnr Drs; take action, demonstrate your huge worth by withholding your labour. This is about fairness & has an enormous mandate. Consultants & SAS will cover. Whether you're a ST7 or F1 you have much to gain. Stand together & don't be sweet talked into strike breaking

This #weekend when you’re off to see your #family, hugging parent(s), having a pint with mates, pls spare a thought for hundreds of foreign #NHS doctors who’ve no family in the UK & are desperate to go home to see their parents/loved ones after 18 months of working non stop 1/n

It's #DeafAwarenessWeek2021, so as a #deaf doctor, I'm sharing a few things that may help D/deaf patients in clinics. Research shows poor communication➡️missed appointments, misunderstanding of diagnosis/ treatments & increases morbidity & mortality for the Deaf. THREAD 👇
