@austeachergroup

Help and advocacy for education staff targeted by bullies. Our goals are for complaint processes to be independent and workplace bullying to be made illegal.

The Federation have an agreement with the Dept not to interfere on these matters. It’s how they get a seat at the table.

@lvan61 @JaneCaro We are aware of three principals sacked in the last year. Two won in the workers comp commission afterwards, another going through it now. We have helped many people get some type of justice in the IRC and WCC.

@JaneCaro I am an ex DoE deputy principal. I have known of a small number of ppl at that level or Principal who have been moved out of school. Appropriately. With support from Teachers Federation. None were moved to classroom teacher as described in this article.

Reading this made my dead straight hair curl! I have written about the increased bullying of principals (especially, it seems, female principals) before - often by parents. This disturbing article is about a different kettle of fish. theaimn.com/department-of-…

We would love to talk to you, Jane. We have over 150 active members - principals, executive, teachers. The stories are different, but all have common threads.
Jane Caro@JaneCaro

@lvan61 I am hearing very different things. Either you were fortunate, this is a one-off ( a five-off I am hearing so far) or things have become much worse. I am looking into it.

@JaneCaro @ElodieMay I have witnessed first hand colleagues with similar experiences. It doesn’t just happen to Principals. It has also been weaponised and used inappropriately by Principals to remove good teachers, good human beings. I am a doE employee and these are my own opinions.

If a superior decides they want to, they can put you on an improvement program or accuse you of misconduct. They don’t need evidence, or will manufacture it afterwards. The Federation simply tells you to go through the process, even though they know it’s bogus.
Jane Caro@JaneCaro

@OperaTimtams I’d like to hear their side of the story, of course. I have heard that money is an issue. The numbers of such complaints have risen so exponentially the union is having trouble funding all the needed legal support.

No matter who the complaint is referred to, it will always come back as unsubstantiated. But they won’t interview you or your witnesses. Or examine evidence you point them to. The trains run on time…

Our group has just as many male members as females. Principals, deputy principals, assistant principals, head teachers, teachers. Don’t have an idea that’s different to your boss, don’t show them up or suddenly your performance is substandard or you’ve committed misconduct.
Jane Caro@JaneCaro

@CKahuki I have no idea. But it’s an occupational hazard for principals - especially female ones.

It’s horrendous, but not confined to principals. This is the modus operandi of the NSW DoE - accuse, isolate, one-sided investigation. Procedural fairness denied at every point. Same when you raise a complaint - the Dept investigates itself and finds nothing to answer.

Bullied teachers in Australia rejoice. A review of ministerial practice has been handed down:

@austeachergroup Sadly this has no impact on the Department of Education and its practices. This is simply a review on Ministers’ officers and their staff.

Independent inquiry, consideration of 1000 submissions, expert witnesses and public hearings... #GallopInquiry recommended a counsellor to student ratio of 1:500. DoE think “Approaching quality mental health support through a ratio does not make sense...” dailyadvertiser.com.au/story/7208856/…

Our almost 200 members would agree with you, Cameron. Bullying by and toward anyone is abhorrent and causes devastating and often long term psychological damage. Workplace bullying laws must happen and be enforced.

Students continue to be denied their right to a qualified teacher in front of every class as principals are increasingly left to their own means to find teachers. This is simply devolution & the consequences of the NSW govt’s discredited Local Schools, Local Decisions policy.

Principals will this week be forced to increase class sizes and scrap subjects because there are not enough teachers to fill vacancies days before classes start. dailytelegraph.com.au/education/stat…

The introduction of laws to punish those engaging in online harassment is a cause for celebration. Now we just need laws against workplace bullying. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect, belittled or targeted.
