@austin_coye Average LOS: 35 days Ref: nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… @ml_barnett % going home is not easy to calculate as LTC use varies regionally, with some substituting assisted living facilities instead of NHs. But 6 mo out, ~1/2 to 2/3 are not in an NH? Ref: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

As requested by @austin_coye, I'll release some threads about misconceptions re: post-acute SNF. We'll see if I remember what hospitalists say to patients... Other SNFists, feel free to chime in.

@austin_coye NB: it varies not just on population but also heavily on medical culture (eg, it does not reflect just the patients being cared for, but also how we choose to put certain people in certain places)

@drklam Would you do a thread on the common misconceptions that we propagate? It’s so tough when patients ask questions because I feel the need to stick with the PT/OT reccomendation but also having no idea what happens in a SNF

A request to hospital clinicians: if you have never worked in a SNF (skilled nursing facility), please be humble when telling patients what to expect when they go there. It's OK to say you don't know.

@tmc_RN SUCH a tough question! I would look for articles similar to yours (sample size, audience, intervention) & look at the journal “aims” to see if it vibes with your work. U can also do general “public health” journals. Always submit to better journals first. Don’t fear rejection!

My wife is alive because I make a lot of money. That’s all. Many/most people could not have done what we have done. The cards fell into place for us. A doc who speaks the language and can parse the lit and knows how to advocate for his family. The $$ to get it done. 9/
