No, neurotypicals do not "mask too". Everyone adjusts their social performance but that is not the same as autistic masking. That's like saying because you like your office space organized you "get OCD" or you "get depression" because you were sad when your fish died. Smh

@stimimi One of the reasons is we know the cost of disorder framing. In a cohort of autistic doctors those who viewed autism as a disorder were almost 3 times as likely to have attempted suicide as those who didn’t

The medical model is back. I've had Consultants say to me "A colleague is interested in your condition, I'll refer you to him". Completely ignoring the pain I was trying to express.

On the BBC Today Programme on Radio 4 @BBCr4today we briefly discussed Professor Dame Uta Frith's @utafrith comments that the concept of the autism spectrum has been stretched so far as to be almost meaningless. I agree we need subgroups, but disagree that there is any evidence for over-diagnosis. We discussed how most autistic people still need much better support and how this is still sorely lacking. @VickiWistow @JulianeWriter Exactly. It becomes very hard to trust any guv sector when at every turn we are subjected to gaslighting and coercive control. Education, health, employment etc. it’s basically the same rhetoric.

Uta Frith would prefer that autism occur in isolation and that autists be hidden away and never speak for themselves so she can be big and important and do all the condescending and Paternalistic explaining without the convenience of self-determination. Hope that helps.!
