@ZacksJerryRig No, you have it backwards. It was in the DSM IV in 1992 that Asperger's and PDD-NOS were added. 2013 saw the release of DSM V, where they were *removed* - because the categorisations were meaningless. From 2013 these variations were all folded into one, Autism Spectrum Disorder.

@WhiteHouse No, autism rates have NOT increased, as shown by numerous studies. Start with Brugha, Leicester Uni. In a random screening, there are as many autistic 60 year olds as 6 y.o. Diagnosis is a different story. Thankfully it's increasing which means fewer undiagnosed autists.

In the last 22 years, autism rates among children have increased nearly 400%. It's time to make our children healthy again!

Weird some scicomm ppl gave the “Tylenol in pregnancy & autism” review some weight. They don’t know the lead author, Baccarelli, had the exact claims thrown out of federal court for having ZERO scientific merit when he was a paid “expert” in lawsuits against Tylenol makers. 1/

I guess Trump and RFK Jr weren’t happy with the studies that said sperm from older men significantly raises the risk of autism.

@CSChouse @Fly_Sistah Autism is a part of human neurodiversity. It's naturally occurring in around 1% of the population. i.e. normal. The word you were looking for is "typical".

Save your clicks. Trump’s big autism announcement is to tie autism to Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, despite studies confirming no link. He will certainly reverse course if Kenvue or Johnson & Johnson bribe him.

@_celia_bedelia_ The closest thing to a scientific link found to Autism is sperm of older men. So, you know that for sure won't be what gets blamed.

Tylenol does not cause autism. Vaccines don’t cause autism. Autism isn’t anyone’s “fault.” It’s simply something someone is born with. Stop blaming mothers and parent’s choices to vaccinate (AND PROTECT) their children.

@BrewHaHaWife @veg_ragabash @_celia_bedelia_ No. Autism is not more prevalent. At all. And plenty of studies out there confirm that autism per se is as present in 60 year olds as in 6 year olds. Same rate. All that's changing is the rate of DIAGNOSIS of autism. Though most autistic people remain undiagnosed.

@veg_ragabash @_celia_bedelia_ Ok fine you’re right it’s really mean of me to say autism is more prevalent now than it used to be and trying to help mothers to have the knowledge they need to not do things while pregnant that cause autism. You’re right, let’s have more autism actually. lol

n 1943 Leo Kanner grouped together a set of behaviours and called it autism. But autism didn't suddenly appear in 1943 anymore than Mt Everest appeared in 1852 when it was "discovered". As long as there have been people there have been autistic people. Always.

Child psychiatrist here. There is no credible link between Tylenol and autism. Tomorrow there will be another push to link Tylenol use to autism, based upon correlational, confounded data that will be inferior to the best studies we currently have.

Nothing "causes" autism any more than anything "causes" left-handedness. It's genetic, you're born autistic. You can't become autistic, or stop being autistic, there's no non-autistic person to 'catch' the autism. It's who you are, always were, and always will be.

I don’t care when the data was collected. If there is any chance that Acetaminophen is causing autism, we need to know. For too many years Acetaminophen was treated like a safe medication and was being popped like candy when, in fact, too much can cause significant liver damage.

Ahead of tomorrow’s big “medical breakthrough” announcement tomorrow on Tylenol use during pregnancy causing Autism, it’s not true. Another example of this admin cherry picking data from years ago, ignoring the best research, and then claiming they are white knights.

@Fielding1101 @CarmenShier @VinGuptaMD There is no rise in autism per se. Plenty of studies out there to confirm, and easy to verify (e.g., random screening of 60 y.o vs 6 y.o, same rate). All that's changing is the rate of DIAGNOSIS. Though most autists remain undiagnosed.

@CarmenShier @VinGuptaMD What is the cause of the significant rise in autism since then? There likely is a genetic component to autism that has caused some autism over time, but that doesn’t explain the significant increase in its frequency of occurence.

@Chrystal4you @ThymeToBeBorn And BTW, you can't be "severely" autistic. It's like being pregnant - either you are or you aren't. The diagnostic criteria are the same for all autistic people.

@Chrystal4you @ThymeToBeBorn Because autists with fewer challenges or who are better at hiding them don't deserve acknowledgement and support. Got it. One of the highest causes of death for autists is suicide, "with the highest risk seen in autistic people without co-occurring intellectual disability".

Girl was playing with boy at park. Boy's dad tells me boy is autistic. Boy is bubbly, social, good eye contact, plays pretend, seems to be of normal intelligence. Dad says boy freaks out when there are loud noises. This does seem like an expansion of diagnostic criteria.
