Father fearing son 'could not read and write Vietnamese' loses custody
A HCMC court has overturned a man's demand for custody of his son, saying his concerns about the boy's Vietnamese illiteracy from living with a foreign step-father and studying at an international school is "unfounded."
An appeal trial at the HCMC People's Court on Wednesday accepted the prosecutors' appeal and the defendant's counter-appeal, dismissing the father's lawsuit.
The verdict from the first-instance court was amended to allow the mother to continue to have direct custody and care of the 7-year-old boy. The father is allowed to visit the child "without obstruction" but must not disrupt the child's schooling.
The court said the first-instance court's conclusion that the defendant, the ex-wife, "is no longer able to directly look after and care for the child because she has a new family and a new child" was "subjective."

When would mom come home? Would she bring them a worm? Would she bring them a fish? Would she bring them a piece of bread? What would mom bring them? They looked at the squirrel.

HCMC man runs celebrity prostitution ring via Telegram groups
A man in Ho Chi Minh City has been accused of facilitating the prostitution of Vietnamese singers, supermodels, and actors via seven online groups totaling 66,000 members.
Nguyen Huu Thai, 25, was detained by HCMC police on Wednesday to be investigated for procurement.
After finishing a jail sentence for storing drugs in August 2022, Thai had masqueraded as a woman and joined 169 prostitution groups, with the aim of collecting prostitutes' data and persuading them to work for him.
Thai then bought certain groups on the messaging app Telegram and acted as their administrators. Whoever wanted to enter the groups had to pay fees.
In order to attract more people, Thai advertised on social media platforms using sensitive images. In the Telegram groups, he posted the images, names and other data on the prostitutes, along with the prices for prostitution.

The crocodiles have been brought to a local farm to be taken care of, awaiting further procedures.
Some of the crocodiles were already dead when the truck was discovered.

New locations set for Saigon fireworks
HCMC will launch fireworks for Lunar New Year's Eve on Feb. 10 in three additional locations in Districts 7, Binh Tan and Cu Chi.
Tran The Thuan, director of the HCMC Department of Culture and Sports, on Thursday said the firework shows would last 15 minutes, with funding from multiple sources.
The three new locations would be the administrative center square of District 7, the Binh Tri Dong B neighborhood in Binh Tan District, and the cultural house in Cu Chi District. With the new locations, there will be 11 spots for firework launching in total in the city.
Other locations for the firework shows included the beginning of the tunnel of the Saigon River in Thu Duc City, the Ben Duoc martyr memorial site in Cu Chi District and the Dam Sen Park in District 11.
Launching fireworks is often done during major celebrations and festivals in HCMC, such as National Day on Sept. 2.
For this year's Tet, the southern metropolis will have light shows and spring festivals in several locations in the city.

Dark clouds were in the sky. The sun went down. The weather got cold. The wind started to blow. Leaves blew off the trees. Paper flew through the air. People buttoned their jackets. The rain started to fall. At first it was quiet. Then it got louder. It was a storm. The rain was very loud. The man couldn't hear his TV. He turned up the volume. Now he could hear his TV

The Facebook users redefining the 20-year-old social network
From California to Southeast Asia, Facebook is capturing a new generation of users who see it as a commercial tool rather than a fun networking platform.
They are more likely to be promoting their businesses than connecting with friends.
As the veteran social media platform celebrates its 20th birthday, four users share their experiences with AFP.
Nina Vukicevic, 31, California
"I have a personal Facebook page, I can't tell you the last time I really looked at it," said Nina Vukicevic.
Vukicevic is farm manager at Common Roots Farm, a non-profit in Santa Cruz that produces organic food and runs courses in gardening and farming.
Vukicevic said Facebook did have many uses for the business -- whether sharing ideas in specialist groups or posting updates to the farm's pages.
"With the groups, I was able to find more local connections, but also resources from around the world on things I'm interested in," they said.
"I get to talk to market gardeners in Switzerland that I wouldn't otherwise be able to connect to because we're all part of this group."
"To be honest, (if Facebook vanished) I would be bummed to not have these resources."
