Reshmi Devi's son had been suffering from a mental illness. Desperate for a cure, she turned to Shanti... a local bhagtini (tantrik woman)... who told her what the gods demanded: the blood of a virgin girl.
The night chosen was Ashtami of Ram Navami... considered auspicious for such rituals.
Reshmi Devi brought her own 12 y/o daughter to the temple (at Shanti's home). Village man Bhimram was also present (he came through backdoor). The child was laid down. Shanti circled a bamboo stick around the girl and declared that the *devas* (spirits) had arrived... and that virgin blood was needed.
What followed was unimaginable.
At Shanti's instruction, Reshmi Devi pulled down her daughter's clothing. The bhagtini inserted the bamboo stick into the child's private parts. When the girl screamed, she was strangled. Bhimram then struck her head with a stone provided by Shanti... splitting her skull open.
Her blood was collected in cupped hands and offered to the goddess.
The crime surfaced before it could be buried in silence. Public outrage swept across the region.
Police have arrested all three... Reshmi Devi, Bhimram, and bhagtini Shanti.
A mother who was meant to protect her daughter became the hand that held her down.

Yes. Apparently there were 300+ idols of pagan gods which were destroyed by Prophet Muhammad when Mecca was conquered. Other statues, artifacts paintings were also destroyed. The lines "jab arze khuda ke kaabe se, sab but uthwaaye jayenge" in the Faiz Ahmad Faiz song Hum Dekhenge refers to this moment.
