This is only 86B per year. Or a billion every 4 days. You could easily spend this. To prevent my immediate death to start I would just be the worlds most generous angel investor and write a check of 100 million to a handful of lucky startups every day. I would then having bought myself time setup a system of lobbyists, politcal activists, and subsidies to incentivize american electricity generation, aluminum production, automation, desalination, technical schools, and space infrastructure that I could pour most of that cash into with no expectation of return. The inheritance i would pass to my children would not be a bank account but the solar system.

@tokuriart The battery pack is dead weight because you can mechanically steer the spider’s gimbal without electric charge

@StrategicTrends Let me guess, a 7” multi pulse motor missile firing on a loft trajectory, with upgraded active seeker. Less drag coasting but more drag maneuvering.

@DrPhiltill That being said, as a person seeking a career in rocket propulsion, huge respect towards putting 3 decades into analyzing plume effects. I know some professors who worked on projects so long that their faces no longer match their faculty page photo, and it is not easy.

@DrPhiltill …urgent at all—after all, both sides are developing the whole system of SLVs, crewed spacecraft and landers independently of each other.

If anyone wants a turnkey Mandarin program I can share what I’m doing. I’m learning it because lunar policy negotiations between the U.S. and China will become exceedingly important over the next 10 years due to AI. My goal is functional fluency in 1 year, full fluency in 2.

@DrPhiltill Interesting. I thought that there’d hardly be any communication outside of diplomatic or the occasional mission operation channels (such as making sure two spacecraft with similar trajectories don’t interfere, etc). It’s all competition and arms race in the news nowadays.

@avgengr There are many levels of discussion and engagement, including e.g. in UN committees, because it is needed to build mutual understanding of the issue and the science, but I think that negotiating agreements can be done for the U.S. only by the state department.

@PatrickFinley_ I’m from the university that developed HAL9000. I’ve worked on a liquid rocket engine’s design and injection system. It hot fired quite recently!

We just partnered with the Musk Foundation to give out $175k in grants to advance the frontier of collegiate rocketry. This is in addition to the $390k we’re already giving out to collegiate teams building propulsive self-landing rockets. When we first started, people laughed and told us what we were attempting would be impossible. 2 years later, several student teams have achieved both TVC and throttled hotfire with liquid engines, and they are making fast progress on their hoppers. We’re already seeing hover attempts at a collegiate level! These kids are doing this on 0.001% of a typical rocket budget, dedicating 80 hour weeks without any pay to build some of the most capable rockets outside of industry. The reason why so many people fall in love with space and rocketry is because it is proof that humanity is capable of the impossible. We want to continue to advance that mission. Back to work.

.@NASA Confirms More Artemis III Plans - Spacer instead of upper stage (saves the ICPS for Artemis IV) - Low Earth Orbit officially confirmed - Artemis III will last longer than Artemis II to further evaluate Orion's life support systems - Test an upgraded heat shield Design and fabrication activities for the spacer are "progressing rapidly" at @NASA_Marshall. Material for the barrel section and the upper and lower rings is currently being machined. Expect more plans to be refined over the coming weeks.
