i wrote a long ass tweet bc i can actually relate btw
like his example in the replies, i scored a 1600 on the SAT on my first try with minimal prep. i never studied for hs tests. going into college, "understanding" of most concepts came very easily to me
then i started feeling like i was falling behind, and i realized, hey being "naturally smarter" doesn't mean shit if you don't put in the hours when it counts
so i'm trying to do better and being more intentional with my productivity. hopefully I can lock in and hopefully someone else sees this and locks in too

this is directionally correct but incredibly oblivious and shortsighted on a granular level
no-life studying for 10 hours a day after school is bad, but it's not an accurate description of asian americans
growing up, asian americans have tons of other activities and commitments, including time for fun and socializing. kids who have no life and study all day have capped social and career prospects, unless they are savants, in which case they deserve to skyrocket up the system
besides, if someone is only "moderately gifted", then they SHOULD put in more hours to get what they want!
if a 6'0 kid really wants to try out for his hs basketball team, and his competitors are all 6'3+, he SHOULD put in more hours working on his technique and endurance, and if he can score more ppg and have better teamwork and play better defense than the 6'5 more physically talented player who didn't put in the hours, then he deserves to make the team and get more playing time
but most importantly, the "truly special", extremely gifted people that are mentioned? they ALSO put in the hours. they didn't sleepwalk their way to the top of their craft.
look at any of the most successful entrepreneurs, scientists, or athletes in America. would they be where they are if they weren't exceptionally gifted? no. would they be where they were if they didn't grind? also no.
so i get the point, but this completely misses the mark on why academically working kids to the bone is bad
and this idea also removes the agency from the aforementioned truly special people in prestige positions and ignores their hard work

This but unironically our whole system was carefully designed to filter out people who masked the fact that they’re only moderately gifted by putting in more hours We don’t want that kind of person stealing prestige positions intended for people who are truly special

hi my name's kevin zhang and i'm on a hunger strike outside of the ai company anthropoc right now because i am in an emergency. anthropic and other ai companies have put rate limits on their coding tools and chat interfaces. these ai's are essential to my coding projects. experts are warning that this policy will mean i have to wait a few hours before i can use claude code again. let us take these warnings seriously.
i am calling on anthropic's management, directors and employees to immediately give me unlimited claude code usage (on the max plan too) and to work to remediate all the bugs in my code.
likewise i'm calling on everyone who uses claude code or cursor or codex to speak the truth with courage. we are in an emergency. let us act as if this emergency is real
