Everybody wants to be an engineer. But very few actually engineer anything. Every year around 750,000 students graduate with engineering degrees. But ask many of them to build something from scratch without a tutorial, and they struggle. Four years of college, yet no original project. Most just copy assignments, download GitHub projects, and write resumes saying: “Proficient in Java, Python, C++.” Many can write a for loop, but don’t know when or why to use it. Some say they’ve done machine learning, but can’t even clean a simple dataset without a tutorial. Instead of learning to build, students spend years preparing for interviews and solving DSA problems. Bootcamps promise “Learn coding in 90 days,” and thousands end up making the same to-do apps and clones. Coding was never the real skill. Thinking was. Coding is just a language to express ideas. But if you don’t have ideas, knowing the language doesn’t matter.

I went back to my college after 10 years. This time, not as a student but as a panelist. Ekdum full circle moment tha. I met some seriously sharp, curious students. One of them asked me, “What’s the most important skill to succeed in this job market?” I knew most people expected me to say AI.But honestly, mera answer simple tha: If you want to make money and stay relevant, become a perpetual learner. Tools change fast. Aaj jo kaam aa raha hai, kal outdated ho sakta hai. You can’t rely on one skill anymore. You have to keep learning, unlearning, and picking things up from scratch. Yes, CGPA matters, classes and exams are important, but ek point ke baad, you’re on your own. Aur wahan pe, jo khud ko sikha sakta hai woh hi aage badhta hai.

Every single thing you do today is something your 90 year old self will wish they could go back and do. The good old days are happening right now. Don't waste it.
