it was him being absolutely devastated by what just happened and instead of standing there in anger and ignoring the cheers sent his way, he chose to acknowledge the fans and make those who were excited to see a driver that close very happy. this isn't performative this is him being emotionally mature and a good person.
y'all want him to be a villian so badly that you make the nicest gestures seem evil. i don't get it.
