Only a limited part of the functionality was accessible without the PIN code, but fortunately I managed to bruteforce a 4-digit PIN. The setup is based on 10 optocouplers (CNY17-2) and looks messy (lots of wires), but it worked.

In this *specific* example, yes, there will be no padding between the fields of nested struct b. Not because the `packed` attribute applies to nested structs (it does not), but simply because struct b needs not to be padded. If you put a char, there will be padding.
