If you have a strong religious belief your stairway and path may look different but will work the same. I believe there is an omniscient being watching over us and I choose to refer to Him as "God" but you may choose a different name or none at all.

If my theory is correct, then at death your life "flashing before your eyes" is your life being reviewed before you climb the stairway, then if you pass, you get into Heaven or Valhalla or what is basically your ideal afterlife.
