“I can’t understand her” is code for “I don’t like that her voice is different and I have to accept it” or “I don’t want to have to make the slightest effort to accommodate someone’s disability.” The onus is always on the disabled person to appear ‘normal’ or keep out of sight.

The Rosie Jones furore has exposed a depressing reality: a significant number of people in this country really would prefer it for visibly disabled people to hide away at home. They’re fine with disabled people, y’know. They just don’t want to have to see or hear them.
