In 2023, I did my teaching practice at Nguthuru Secondary School, in the Kabati area of Muranga. I had the opportunity during those four months to move around, interact, and learn how people around there live. One of the most inspiring things I noticed is how the Agikuyu people work. Very smart and hardworking people, those ones. Old, young, crippled, women, men—everyone is making money of their own in all ways. Farming is not just for subsistence consumption, but they ensure they have a surplus to earn a few coins. Also, I loved the fact that they have invested back in their backyard. Roads, electricity, and water are not a privilege, but it is because they hold their leaders accountable. Lastly, in all the places I went, not even once did I spot a placard or poster of a witch doctor promising to revive and boost business or get a lost lover back; these are people who believe in their hard work. Muranga is among the counties I hope to have one of my homes in.
