@datzoulou You’re wrong because you seem to think this was adequate preparation. When it wasn’t. Not even close. I think we’ve talked about this enough. Thanks for the back and forth.

@b_miklasz Yes, 25 games in RF, 2 games in LF, and 4 games in CF. Where’s the disconnect, Bernie? Where am I wrong?

Better check your facts on that one. Go look on Baseball Reference at how many games he played in the outfield at Springfield in 2022. Thank you.
miz@datzoulou

@jennykookachoo @b_miklasz He didn’t just get thrown into RF when he got called up. He had been practicing and playing there prior to his call-up.

A twisting of the facts, but if that’s what you’re claiming it’s OK with me. Blatant failure on the Cardinals part. That’s the bottom line. And that’s the only point that matters. His incredibly poor defensive ratings in RF are proof of that. Thanks, and I’ll leave you be. Take care.

@b_miklasz @stlcrdnlsfn08 That wasn’t my point. You’re arguing something completely different from what I said. You’re arguing that he didn’t get enough instruction in the OF, which isn’t at all what I said. I said that he had practice in the OF and had played RF prior to the 2023 OD, which is a fact.

I’m gonna close this session down. Have enjoyed the interactions. It’s good for me. And of course it’s OK to disagree on some things. Thank you all very much. Make sure to follow of you aren’t and please get the word out.

@raylewis4520 I am sorry. I won’t respond to you anymore. Not because I don’t want to. But if it makes you so upset, I don’t want to do that. No malice was intended on my part. Just defending and explaining my point of view because we disagree on some things. Take care.

Actually I think we do know - well, at least those of us who bother to mention the successes - and not just the failures. Thanks.
birdsandphins@chris_hott6368

@b_miklasz I’m not ripping Marmol for player development. I’m saying we don’t know yet so why the extension? I get wanting to always have a two or three year deal in place but it just seemed odd timing.

But he hardly had any experience. That’s the point. If you think playing a new position for 20, 24 games at Double A with no full-time instructor available to work with him was proper preparation for starting him in RF on Day One in the majors … I don’t know what to tell you. I guess we can disagree on that. The dude was getting coached by teammates at Double A on how to play the outfield. That’s the way to prepare your top prospect for the bigs at 20 years old? I don’t think so but that’s just me. Thanks.

@stlcrdnlsfn08 @b_miklasz Never once said that it was. All I did was point out that opening day wasn’t the first time he ever played OF.

I agree with you 100%. He’s very open about talking about his failures and how poorly he handled the criticism. He outgrew that. Has come a long way in that regard. Even with the mistakes early on, the Cardinals have won 15 more games than they should have with this guy as manager in his first 4 seasons based on run differential and underlying factors. They’ve exceeded their “expected” wins total in all four years. They’ve bullpen management over the last two seasons has been superb.

@b_miklasz Oli is not the same manager he was in ‘22 and ‘23. He has really improved himself into being a good manager. Some people can’t grasp that or that it’s even possible to go from probably a sub-par manager into a good one.

Sure he should be held accountable. Like the time I write two or three columns (at least) saying the way he let the fundamentals and defense slip so terribly in 2023 was a fireable offense. I spent about a week blasting him over the Helsley 9th inning screwup in Game 1 of 2022 wild card series. But you make no attempt to be objective, which is fine. Just don’t pretend that you’re objective. It’s OK to say that you just don’t like the guy. I respect people who just come out and say it and leave it at that. That’s cool with me. Thanks, Ray.
Raymond Lewis@raylewis4520

@b_miklasz this one really got me. So let me ask you Bernie the great lover of oli? Does oli as the leader of the team have any accountability? Is anything under his control? Seems when things go wrong everyone gets the blame for oli but oli just says if they do what me and brown say

@LukeMc13 I love them too. I’ve talked about them managing a lot. But it ain’t going to happen here … not anytime soon if at all … so I don’t harp on it. Especially considering the respect and fondness Pujols and Molina have for Marmol. Thanks.

@b_miklasz Here's the truth bro: oli is solid and what you have laid out is true but us die hards love us some Albert and Yadi. Watching them manage in this classic sounds like a future bernie show to me

This is a complex topic because those who generally are disapproving of Marmol will try to put anything negative with Walker and Gorman on him. It’s so easy that way; removes all accountability from the players. (Part one)
birdsandphins@chris_hott6368

@KevinWheeler94 @TonyWeber1 @b_miklasz I know. So why not let us see how these guys and other young players do now that we hopefully have management that understands what’s needed to win in today’s game? Why the rush to extend his contract when we don’t really know what his true player development record is?

After the streak, his numbers in April fell apart — ground ball ground ball ground ball — and that’s when Mozeliak sent him to Memphis. The problem is, they should have worked on solving that problem at the Triple A level before rushing him to the bigs. A loud-mouth talk-show host spent a lot of time late in 2023 spring training talking about his decline late in camp because of a soaring ground ball rate but … I was a bad guy for saying it. Or so I was told.

@b_miklasz I hold Mozeliak and Marmol’s coaches (not Marmol) accountable for the severe decline of Jordan Walker. He had a hitting streak going with a high hard hit rate, then they started screwing with his swing and he’s never been able to get it back.

@chris_hott6368 @b_miklasz Intruding here, but the big org philosophical change is transitioning from what’s best for the MLB team at the moment to what’s best for the long term development of each player.

There’s things I really like about him as the manager and there are some things I’ve disliked. And not that anyone has to pay attention to my work, but I’ve repeated my dislikes about his managing many times. There’s good and there’s not so good. Which means he’s a big-league manager. Hardly a new thing. Every manager goes through that.
