En vérité, après cette soi-disant «colonisation arabe» le Maghreb restait toujours majoritairement berbérophone. L’administration et les lois au niveau tribal ont très peu changé, mis a part au niveau centrale avec l’arrivée Califat.
La culture également est restée en grande partie intacte, d’autant plus que la charia garantit une certaine reconnaissance du droit coutumier.
L’impact le plus formel se situe au niveau religieux, avec l’adoption massive de l’islam par les populations et les élites.
D’ailleurs après cette "colonisation" de grands empires amazighs ont émergé, comme les Almoravides et les Almohades.
En revanche, la colonisation occidentale a été, de manière factuelle plus destructrice pour les cultures et les populations amazighs, notamment dû au jacobinisme et une centralisation extrême du pouvoir, qui ont supprimé les élites locales, et donc des cultures, juridictions et administrations locales.
L’idée selon laquelle la «colonisation arabe» serait équivalente à la colonisation occidentale est relayée par les berbéristes, profitant d’un manque de connaissance de l’histoire antérieure à l’État-nation, en particulier au niveau scolaire au Maroc et en Algérie, pour distiller leur propagande.
