An Indian climber who arrived on Everest just a couple of days ago, with little to no proper acclimatisation, is now making headlines on Instagram by announcing plans to spend 24 hours in Everest’s ‘death zone.' But many in the mountaineering community are questioning the comparison being implied with the legendary Babu Chhiri Sherpa 🇳🇵, who famously spent 21 hours on the summit of Mt Everest itself in 1999, without supplementary oxygen, at 8,848.86 m. There is a massive difference between surviving on bottled oxygen at the summit or lower altitude near the South Col and enduring the actual summit without oxygen support. One is a carefully supported high-altitude stunt. The other was one of the greatest achievements in mountaineering history. Everest has increasingly become a stage for social media noise, where hype often travels faster than true achievement. But records in the death zone should be measured not by Instagram engagement, but by honesty, style, altitude, and respect for those who came before. Babu Chhiri never needed daily updates, dramatic reels, or self-promotion to prove greatness. The mountain always remembers him.
