Africa asserts influence on global AI panel: South Africa’s Professor Vukosi Marivate is among eight African experts selected for the UN’s newly established Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. The 40-member panel, chosen from 2,600 applicants, is the first global scientific body tasked with assessing AI’s risks, opportunities, and societal impacts. It will advise governments worldwide as they work to regulate the technology reshaping economies and labor markets.

This is true, but it is deeply embarrassing that Zambia and many other African countries still rely on the United States for ARVs, despite sitting on natural resources worth trillions of dollars across the continent.
ARVs are now relatively inexpensive to procure at scale, which makes it even more absurd that a country can be held to ransom over its mineral wealth in exchange for life-saving medication which it can buy or even make. This is not a resource problem, it is a leadership problem.
It is a tragic failure of governance and accountability. Stop the corruption, prioritise public health, and buy your people the medicines they desperately need.
